I have the same problem as Mspear.
If hes not around I regularly have meat free days

BelligerentGhoul · 29/07/2010 18:48

See you on Saturday then, Riven! I have a lovely new frying pan ready for making the dosas! I do not have a good record with batter-ish things though, so I hope I don't make a horrible mess of them.

Ready made as in already cooked and round and browned and yummy ready to just fill and eat at home? WHERE? They are one of my favourite foods, ever.

Am going to try and make the potato-y stuff for the middle as well.

Lulumaam · 29/07/2010 19:01

do people really eat meat /fish every day?

we have several meat free days a week

red meat far less frequently than we used to aswell

bibbitybobbityhat · 29/07/2010 19:09

Of course! We are a pretty average meat-eating family but we must have three or four meals each week without meat. Surely its easy to have just one veggie meal per week. Pizza. Jacket potatoes with beans or sweetcorn and salad. Omelettes. Mushroom risotto. Etc. Veg soup in hundreds of ways. Veg curry (yum). They are all EASY and healthy and could be part of anyone's diet.

I would love to think that missing meat one day a week would make a difference, I was vegetarian for twenty years (16 -36yrs), now I eat organic meat from a local farmer. I still like my old vegetraian meals so we don't eat meat every single day anyway but I really think if people want to consider the environment and cost their meals take on it, they would need to make sure they don't buy meat that has made a huge journey before getting to the supermarket shelf.

As far as weight loss, vegetarian dishes are of course less fattening, people do eat too much meat daily.

And cost, well when I was really broke I could always stretch my pennies to buy more food as a vegetarian then I would have if I was eating meat. These days the organic meat we buy from the farmer is much cheaper then supermarket prices, but I think people often think it is the other way around and don't check these things out.

I really fancy one now!

Hijack over, OP. Thanks Riven.

More ideas for easy meatless meals -

asparagus risotto (I do a baked one so it's even easier);

omelletes, homemade wedges and salad;

cous cous and chickpea tagine (this is stupidly easy);

pasta pesto;

veggie chilli and rice;

Thai curry and rice;

chickpea curry.

BelligerentGhoul · 29/07/2010 19:55

omelettes - I can NEVER spell it!

TrillianAstra · 29/07/2010 20:09

Mmm, Riven's rasam thingy looks yummy.

AnnoyingOrange · 29/07/2010 20:11

my dh is a total canrivore too so no meat free days in this house

TrillianAstra · 29/07/2010 20:37

DP will eat a non-meat meal, but it has to have a lot of cheese. Also he's anti pulses and lentils after a lentil-weavery childhood, which doesn't help anything veggie to be very healthy.

SpringHeeledJack · 29/07/2010 20:47

We only eat meat a couple of times a week (unless we go on holiday to the Netherlands- then it's Meat Products all week. eeeewwwww!)

my dp used to be a total carnivore-now he has to eat some vegan meals

the poor sod

BelligerentGhoul · 31/07/2010 19:15

Riven - have just made and devoured the dosas and they were bloomin' lovely! I made:

dosas (from a mix);
the potato filling (recipe from the Torygraph site);
the gravy stuff - a bastardisation of the two you linked to plus various others (dd2 absolutely loved this);
coconut chutney (Torygraph site);
channa chaat.

I am sooooooo full and it was sooooooo delicious. Thank you for your help.

Energyrethinking · 16/08/2010 09:52

I did a meatless monday this week with the family - I took them to a veggie restaurant at the end of the day without telling them. They actually liked it!

We don't eat meat every day.

I used to be vegetarian (was brought up veggie but started eating meat aged about 20). DH has always been a big meat eater but eats what is put in front of him Grin. DS1 isn't that keen on meat, but likes fish. DD loves meat like his dad. DD isn't keen on meat (unless its sausages!).

We ate meat over the weekend, on Saturday I put chorizo on the pizzas and yesterday we had a shoulder of lamb with couscous and roasted veg. But for the rest of the week the meals are meat free: pasta with pesto and salad, stir fried tofu and veg with noodles, aubergine and tomato curry with rice... that kind of thing.
