Ethical dilemmas

It’s in the name? Isn’t it?

I’ve been following and reading posts on Mumsnet for years now and it’s not a massive thing but what’s with the massive influx of posts from people who are not mums or dads or in any kind of parenting capacity?
I dont understand it?
I used to come on here and look for and comment on advice and feel that we all at least had that in common but now it’s totally different. When I read the comments and questions I just don’t feel the same solidarity as before!!
Wondering if netmums are taking threads from other support websites and uploading them as their own or if there are just a lot of people on this site that are here in no parenting capacity asking for advice?

netmums is the other place ...

You don't need to be a parent to use the pet boards, or gardening, or AIBU or FWR or Telly addicts.
It would be unusual for a non parent not ttc to hang out loads on Parenting.

Xiaoxiong · 11/12/2022 16:32

There have always been lots of non-parents here, otherwise the conception boards wouldn't exist! I posted here for 2 years before DS1 arrived - one while TTC, and the second while pregnant with him. And of course you can be drawn here for one topic and then start to comment on loads of others.

There are also people who don't have kids who post here in the hope of getting perspective or advice from people who are parents, eg. On step-parenting or on whether to have kids, or on how parents will react to a child-free wedding, etc etc.

And the big one is FWR because so many other places on the internet censor or outright ban reality-based conversations between women about women's rights.

Anyone who wants to appreciate and understand a parent's point of view can use it

Dd (16) has used it before to see what other mums think about something before she broaches it with me 🤣

The irony of the OP saying 'it's in the name isn't it' and getting the name of the site wrong Wink

There have been 100s of threads on here asking why non-parents are here, maybe have a read of some of the replies...

When my daughter started uni she was living with a gay guy (18) who used to use it for housekeeping tips.

It's an open forum with lots of different areas for different interests.

Non-parents have been posting here for years. Surely you realise it's expanded beyond discussion about parenting.

Kimmicat · 11/12/2022 19:25

Sorry, I totally get that it’s not an ethical discussion but wasn’t sure which heading to post under.
absolutely get the conception groups, but that’s still kinda parenting advice and related to the groups name.
I was just genuinely curious as before I had children I would’ve never come to a parenting site for advice so was just wondering if all the posts were actually real or if they had been uploaded from somewhere else lol

I see the mistake I made in the original post, just not sure how to change it

Please explain why I need to be a parent before I comment on a gardening question?
