It’s 5.30pm on a very sunny Sunday and my husband and I have decided to have a BBQ . Just the two of us , no music just cooking outside . My neighbours are complaining that their children go to bed early as they have school so us cooking in the garden and sitting chatting is causing her children to stay awake. .We have heard them all day enjoying their garden with no complaints from us . Should we stop ? I think not but AITA for not ?

Please don't stop.

oakleaffy · 10/07/2022 17:36

Carry on ! I’m sure you are quiet.

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 10/07/2022 17:36

They’re totally unreasonable. Just ridiculous. It’s 5.30pm!

Winterfellismyhome · 10/07/2022 17:36

No. Its half 5. They need to get over themselves

bluejelly · 10/07/2022 17:36

A 5:30 bedtime is bonkers - and I'm sure you're not making any unreasonable noise. I would smile politely and carry on as you were.

Hothammock · 10/07/2022 17:36

No way.
After 8pm, loud laughing and music would be inconsiderate when you know your neighbours children are in bed, but before that, they just have to lump it. Perhaps let her know what time you will be winding up so they have something in mind and don't get too wound up.

At 5.30pm sounds fine. Personally I loathe the smell of BBQs so would have gone out if I'd known a neighbour was having one but they're totally allowed to in their own garden!

Gone 9pm etc I'd have a word.

oakleaffy · 10/07/2022 17:37

They go to bed at 5:30?!!!
That’s savage.

WarmJuly · 10/07/2022 17:37

It's only 5.30pm on a rare, glorious Sunday. Of course you should be able to have a bbq.

It's very strange that they put their children to bed so early. Does anyone else think this is really odd for school age children?

FionnulaTheCooler · 10/07/2022 17:42

Your neighbour is at it, no way is your barbecue keeping her kids awake at half 5. Ignore her and carry on with your evening.

onmywayamarillo · 10/07/2022 17:46

Our neighbours have a bbq right out side their back door close to ours and the smoke goes up through my youngest window.. which is annoying in this heat as I have to shut it. I mean as long as it's not near the house it's fine
We are having a bbq right now, but it's at the back of the garden.

Loveisnotloving · 10/07/2022 17:56

Who in their right mind puts school going kids to bed at 5.30? Are they vampires?

RagingWoke · 10/07/2022 18:12

They're putting kids to bed at 5:30?! Carry on with your evening and don't think about it, you're not playing music or having a wild party. I try to keep anything potentially irritating or disturbing to before 7:30/8pm and not until after 9am which I feel is fair... and usually let our neighbours know if we're planning something, like my DCs birthday party last weekend. however I couldn't get annoyed as long as noise is kept down after 9/10pm from neighbours.

However, you've admitted to having a bbq on mn, brace yourself for the bbq rage 🫣

Should you stop? Absolutely not!

princessjonsie1967 · 10/07/2022 19:18

It because they are trying to settle them down and they sleep in the back of the house . They are doing showers etc so I think they actually go to sleep about 7.30. We are in our fifties so no loud music just us eating and talking and the dog is out there with us . I think it’s the smell and the talking and they can see the dog that’s the children won’t settle . We are coming in now anyway

You can totally stay out and sit in your own garden.

Their bedtime preferences for their children don’t trump perfectly normal garden use. It’s 7.25pm on a lovely Sunday evening!
