Next doors payslip (well actually it was a P60) came through my door. I opened it not having read the address as looked exactly like mine and had to pause because the total was far more than I got paid then I realised as looks exactly what work sent to me. Now I'm embarrassed and don't know what to do. I've opened it but do you think my neighbour will believe this? We wave and say hi etc but don't really know each other that well.
WWYD???

I wouldn't say anything and would tear it up. He can get a duplicate if he needs one.
I'm sure he'd rather that than know that you know confidential info.

Floralnomad · 22/05/2014 23:38

Or seal it back up as best you can and stick it through the door when he's out ,that way he won't know who opened it or whether it just got damaged in the post.

lougle · 22/05/2014 23:40

You can't destroy someone else's post! It's illegal. Just pop it through the door with 'opened in error. Sorry!' On the back of it.

BackforGood · 22/05/2014 23:41

What lougle said

bellarations · 24/05/2014 23:05

Agree with flora...

mrsmopps · 29/05/2014 17:02

put it through the door anonymously?

FourForksAche · 29/05/2014 17:05

I'd destroy it and say nothing. it would be embarrassing for them as well as you if they know you know their earnings. I'm not convinced they'll believe you opened it in error.

annebullin · 29/05/2014 17:09

Do not destroy somebody's P60. Shock Just let them know what has happened. It'll be fine.

springbabydays · 29/05/2014 17:15

I'd put it back anonymously. You could even put it in the postbox, it would get back to him eventually. Definitely don't destroy it, I think you can only get one original.

whydoibothersometimes · 04/06/2014 23:19

Don't destroy it! I'm sure the person will understand it was in error. I was waiting for my tax disc to arrive, was getting to the last day I could drive without it. A person from another road came to my house with it. He had opened it in error, he said he didn't even take note of it and just opened it as he lives alone and wouldn't expect it to be for anyone else. I was so grateful he bought it round! Never occurred to me to be anything but thankful.
This person may really need this to complete forms tax creds etc? I'm sure delay for that type of situation would be far worse than a neighbour knowing your earnings.

ThatBloodyWoman · 04/06/2014 23:22

I would knock on the door and be up front about having opened it in error.

I think most people can sort out who's telling the truth and who's a bullshitter.

Jinsei · 04/06/2014 23:23

Shock at the people saying they would destroy it! It isn't yours to destroy!

I'd just explain that it was opened in error.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 04/06/2014 23:25

Please don't destroy it. Either take it round and explain or post anonymously.

Isabeller · 04/06/2014 23:27

If you put it through the door as it is, no need even to write on it, it has clearly been opened most people would assume in error, but who knows who it went to not necessarily you.

(I've had post for same number, different street and mystreetname road/place etc)

ThatBloodyWoman · 04/06/2014 23:29

Do it quick too as lots need them for tax credits etc.

LittleRedDinosaur · 04/06/2014 23:32

I'd completely understand if someone accidentally opened my post like that. I think you should go round and say sorry and explain and, if they get funny with you, you can walk away knowing they are an arse and you've don't the right thing.

smokeandfluff · 09/06/2014 21:49

Please don't destroy it, just call around and tell them what happened. Easy mistake to make-I open post before I check who its addressed to

lljkk · 09/06/2014 22:19

Hand it back & forget about it.

Tryharder · 16/06/2014 21:45

How much does he earn?

Cookiepants · 16/06/2014 21:48

Wait til the wee small hours and sneakily post it through his letterbox.
Shock at people suggesting destroy it.

Hippychickster · 21/10/2015 08:33

I did this once. Our payslips are put in our (alphabetical) pigeon holes at work. I opened the one next to mine, with the same initials. I felt terrible and like I should have been more vigilant, but I just told him and said sorry it was a mistake and he was fine. Didn't bat an eyelid!
Just go round and give it to him. What's the worst that can happen?

PurpleDaisies · 21/10/2015 08:39

The worst that can happen is you give it to a new neighbour because the original guy had moved given that this thread is 16 MONTHS OLD.
