Kitchen timer

Can anyone recommend a kitchen timer for my mum to use when cooking? She's 84 and in pretty good health but she does get tired in the evenings and for the last while, after putting food in the oven, she sits on the sofa and nods off! Her oven does have a timer but it just makes a 'ping' noise which is too quiet as she's in the next room.

I think she needs something pretty basic but that is loud when it goes off and also continues to make noise until manually switched off.

I know she could use her phone but she's not great with the phone other than using it to make phone calls.

I have looked at lots on Amazon but none give info about whether the alarm continues until shut off which is important.

I’m in a similar boat, I think the digital ones are better as they’re clearer to see. Bought my mum one in either JL or Lakeland, nothing fancy. I had a problem with the old school manual ones, thought they were all faulty but apparently you need to twist it all the way round to eg 60 minutes then to whatever you want to time in order for them to ring.

Thanks @EverythingIsComputer, yes I think digital would be best. She does have another manual timer where you twist it round to 20 mins or whatever but it just 'buzzes' briefly when it gets to '0' so of no use in waking her from her slumbers!

Get her an Alexa. She can tell it to set an alarm for 20 mins and it’s loud when it goes off.

I was going to suggest an Alexa. ours is really loud.

Mother and MIL, 90, would be lost with the cincept of an Alexa.

Can she cook earlier and reheat in the microwave? My mum could do and does do that.

MIL has carers who make her lunch now and leave sandwiches or a cold platter for her tea.

I had considered Alexa but she's not a big fan of tech, I think she would most likely thank me then tuck it away in a corner. Will have another think though.

@RosesAndHelleboresI was just speaking with her and she had eaten dinner at around 4pm and is planning to have tea and cake this evening so either a very early dinner or just cooking early then re-heating later could be the way to go!

Same with my mum, she’d also hate the idea of it (I’m not a fan either!).

My parents use Alexa, it's good as it can hear the instruction across the room, have more than 1 alarm e.g. for 2 dishes, medication etc and I can use the 'drop in' function to speak to them without them having to get up and go to the phone - if I'm lucky they turn the TV down! As their mobility and visibility has decreased they stopped using the traditional pinger as it wasn't where they were and was frequently underneath something

How about a timer you wear round your neck?

@WindyBeechit does sound like Alexa would be very useful for her but I don't even have one myself so need to look into it properly. I guess if I did get one and mum couldn't get used to it I could just use it mysel!

Do they have wi-fi? It does need that to work. If you then put the Alexa on your amazon account you can use the phone app to drop in i.e. you don't need a second device. It will also play the radio, give news headlines etc.
