My mum has died

I’m a bit of a frequent flyer on this board. My mother has been in a nursing home since her stroke in 2021. This is something like the 5th deathbed call there has been over two years. She died reasonably peacefully this morning and I was with her and had the privilege of seeing her final breath.

I cried yesterday when she was going downhill but I feared she might survive yet again. Now she is at peace at long, long last. There will be a lot of emotion to come but now I feel peaceful too.

She was a lovely mum to me. I am so lucky to have had that.

I’m so sorry for your loss :(
mums are so precious. I lost mine 2 years ago, the mixture of relief and grief was awful. I now just remember the good years we had, not the last three of hell for her

take care of yourself xxxx

I’m so sorry for your loss OP. I’m glad you were with her and that she went peacefully. Best wishes to you and I hope your feeling of peace lasts, and that you have someone with you x

Sorry for your loss @PermanentTemporary but I am glad your mum is at peace now Flowers

Ooodelally · 28/01/2026 04:37

I am very sorry for your loss, may her memory be a blessing x

PermanentTemporary · 28/01/2026 04:40

I wonder if she was waiting for me. I parked outside the home at 3am and her last breath was at 3.18. I was 20 minutes too late to be with my dad when he died so I really feel so lucky to have been able to be here.

So sorry for your loss. I am so pleased you were there for her at the end though. May she RIP.

I am so sorry OP.

I believe she waited for you. What a beautiful relationship you had, a loving kind mum. Im sure she would have picked you as her daughter a million times over.

Be very kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve her. I know i am a stranger on the internet but I am thinking of you and your lovely mum who is at peace now x

Sorry for your loss. It’s good you managed to be there.

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 28/01/2026 05:55

My heart goes out to you today. Even if it was expected or a blessing it’s going to take a while to sink in.

I’m so sorry for your loss, it sounds like she was a lovely mum x

rookiemere · 28/01/2026 07:17

@PermanentTemporary sorry for your loss. You have been a source of comfort and wise words on the EP boards.

TamarindCottage · 28/01/2026 07:24

Deepest condolences 💐

WideOpenBeaches · 28/01/2026 07:26

Can I send you a big hug? 🤗
I know it’s generally frowned on around here.

Glad you were there at the end.

I heard a great programme on R4 a few years ago about people dying. I almost turned it off, but it was a very amusing and anecdotal about dying people either waiting for their relatives/ children to leave them alone so they could die in peace - or as your experience testifies - people hang on until someone arrives.

Your Mum obviously waited for you 🙂

So sorry for your loss. She's at peace with your dad now, so glad you made it in time, what a precious moment to be able to be with her as she slipped away 💐

Enko · 28/01/2026 07:37

Condolences

Yes it sounds like she was waiting for you. What a lovely knowledge that you had a lovely mum.

BlueLegume · 28/01/2026 07:42

@PermanentTemporary oh goodness. So sorry but such a lovely thought that Mum waited for you. I hope you can get some solace from the fact you were there with her. Another hug here and hope all the lovely memories can flood back over the hard past 5 years.💐

Melminiani · 28/01/2026 08:06

I’m so sorry for your loss OP. Please take gentle care of yourself 💙

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 28/01/2026 08:38

I'm sorry for your loss. There will probably be lots of mixed feelings over the days, weeks, months ahead but I am so glad you were able to be with her and it does seem like she hung on until you got there. She sounds like a great mum and you are a wonderful daughter.

anothereveningalone · 28/01/2026 08:44

Bless you both. She waited for you.

My grandad did the same, waited until we were all at his house and then took his last breath with us all around his bed saying “you can go now, we love you”.

i’m so so sorry. She knew you were there with her. It is a privilege to have someone be with you as you pass. I also believe people come to “get” you when you pass, so there wasn’t a moment she was alone. You’ve been an amazing daughter to her.

Nevertriedcaviar · 28/01/2026 08:48

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. You obviously had a very good relationship with your mum, and you sound like a caring, wonderful daughter.

Give yourself time to grieve, and in the future, remember that your mum would want you to be happy and to live your best life. xx

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/01/2026 09:02

I'm so sorry OP. You have given a lot to others on Elderly Parents. How lovely that you could be together with your Mum for her final moments xx.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/01/2026 09:10

Aw, I’m sorry op. It’s tough. Glad she finally went and it was peaceful with you there. The constantly being called in for their last night/last moments, for them to rally round really takes a terrible toll. May she RIP.
