And news, news, news, news

honestly ART, what an utterly drivel filled programme it is, people buying crap with the unfunniest narrator. My dad loves it. I dread being at their house at the appropriate time, as I am today.

it's even worse than Bargain Hunt and I can't stick that either.

either antiques or Doom Laden News from the Middle East

My mum was obsessed with the farming woman and her million children. So much sodding details. I was quite relieved when the shepherdess woman divorced her husband and mum's running commentary of her antics stopped.

Is your mum still alive? Because they're back with a new series in Channel 4. It's possibly called The Farm Next Door, and is about them all doing up... the farm next door.

It is definitely better than my mum's beloved Tipping Point. ooh, a good bit of lateral there I hope Ben Shepherd gets paid well for that drivel.

Sorry to add to your pain, but I saw a trailer last night and it is coming back.

I am separated rather than divorced but if I ever get around to it and have to put a reason it will be TV watching!
I now have one of those Art TVs which sits there quietly with some lovely art on display and don’t have to put up with constant loud drivel in my home.

HiThereSquare · 08/10/2024 09:26

No ones mentioned that you are being subjected to these programmes at deafening volume levels.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 08/10/2024 09:33

My parents got a full 5-speaker & sound bar system for their TV and had bass boost set to max. Then complained that you can't hear the dialogue on TV programmes nowadays because they add that awful loud rumbling noise to everything.

Antiques Road Trip is great!

Conversely, my Mum never, ever watched any of this stuff. Once she was too far gone with dementia and in a care home, she and the other residents were plonked in a circle and forced to watch this stuff all bloody day, whether they liked it or not. It made me very sad…

That, of course, is a question to be asked in advance of the care home. Is there a non TV lounge they can use/ can they stay in their room, or are they “encouraged” to stay in the TV lounge

Try watching U & Drama in an afternoon, every advert is for either over 50's plans or Distinct Funerals & Pure Cremations, we call it the death hours.

😂 We used to shout, in response to:

'Dad, it's June."

"...and the day is... that's right, Tuesday... and the Prime Minister is... come on Dad, you know this...".

Topseyt123 · 08/10/2024 10:05

Antiques Road Trip, Bargain Hunt, Flog It, Money for Nothing, Yorkshire Auction House, Salvage Hunters and similar stuff are all now favourites of my elderly and fairly immobile mother. When I am visiting I do watch some of them with her and I know I'll miss that when she's no longer there.

I can't moan about it really. My mother can no longer fill her days herself because of health issues, can't drive because of very badly deteriorated eyesight, can't read (which she used to love) for the same reason, can't walk far except for shuffling around her house and can only go out when either my sister or I are with her and can manage her wheelchair.

So I can't begrudge her these programmes. My mother herself might well have scoffed at them years ago, but now they help entertain her through endless days with nothing else happening.

FifiFalafel · 08/10/2024 10:20

My mum phoned me up once to tell me that a man had died.
I felt so sorry for her as I thought he must be someone she knew quite well.
Turned out he was an antique expert from Bargain Hunt.

These shows are good, relaxing company for people who have a lot of time on their hands and perhaps time alone too.

I reckon on Gransnet there will be many threads about young people who only want to talk to their elderly parents about Big Brother and Love Island.

FictionalCharacter · 08/10/2024 10:32

I detest antiques roadshow, bargain hunt, bake off, strictly, all the soaps etc. Despite being in my 60s and therefore regarded by some of you lot as Elderly Parent age 😁 My dd however, in her 20s, LOVES antiques road show and the baking/sewing/potterying crap.

Fortunately being an older person doesn’t automatically cause you to choose crappy TV! And I think for dd it’s a stress reliever, a temporary escape into another world where people get very serious about meringues.

RaraRachael · 08/10/2024 11:10

When we visit PiLs the TV is blaring at an enormous volume. He has hearing aids but won't wear them "In case anyone sees them" FFS he's 91 and they never go out so goodness knows who these judgemental people are.

It's one long borefest of him droning on giving his opinion of world affairs etc. Thankfully we don't visit often as they're far away. I do wonder if we're going to end up like this one day shudders

Brefugee · 08/10/2024 11:15

aw my mum loves it and i don't see her often so we watch together. She also loves (I mean REALLY LOVES) Richard Osman's House of Games. So we watch that too.

I will probably miss it all when she's no longer with us.

funnelfan · 08/10/2024 11:18
high fidelity 90s GIF

The volume issue always reminds me of this ad (maxell tapes for those of that vintage and technology!)

My dad moaned at me the other day for shouting at him, I pointed out that I had got so used to shouting over thr deafening television that it had become my default volume in their house

Antiques Road Trip is great!

I genuinely would prefer to watch paint dry. At least it would be quiet and nobody would be making jokes that made cracker jokes look witty and sophisticated.

Brefugee · 08/10/2024 11:26

that reminds me that i need to get some discreet ear plugs for my next visit. Mum has tinnitus which doesn't help.

Timeforabiscuit · 08/10/2024 12:14

I don't know what life will be like after DH dies (end of life brain tumour) - but I know there will be alot less television!

Currently watching Australian MasterChef - and I swear there is no end to it!

Abra1t · 08/10/2024 12:15

Godesstobe · 07/10/2024 16:35

I feel your pain, but I raise you Midsummer Murders (which my very elderly mother watches on repeat).

Midsummer Murders will still be on when humankind has blown itself up and only lizards remain to watch it.

Godesstobe · 08/10/2024 12:37

I think @Topseyt123 has it right. My mother will be 95 next month. She used to be incredibly active - cooking, gardening, hearing children read at the village school, etc, but she is pretty much confined to an armchair these days because of a bad back and hands crippled by arthritis. She was also very intelligent and whipped through a cryptic crossword every morning before breakfast but she struggles now and there is no doubt her brain has slowed down.

She is very fortunate in that she still plays bridge every week, and still goes to coffee mornings and her ladies' luncheon club and has family living nearby and really great neighbours, but she does struggle to fill her time now and these programmes help fill that gap. Plus she can guarantee that there will be no swearing or full frontal sex.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/10/2024 13:10

I love antiques road trip.. it's mindless tv to switch off to after a long day at work. I usually nod off. And I like the day trips they go on

Flog it on the other hand. Paul Martin is soo condescending to everyone and thinks he knows best. Then he went on House of Games and did dreadfully and even on the history rounds

Tupperwarelid · 08/10/2024 13:11

Vera anyone, with the lovely Brenda Blethyn who lives near my mum? Or All Creatures Great and Small?

If you can, yes of course. In the rural north, you’re limited in that regard!

reesewithoutaspoon · 08/10/2024 13:45

I will take your antiques road trip and swap it for Judge Judy and GB news on a loop.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 08/10/2024 21:23

I talk to my DF about four times a day, and our conversation is often a running commentary on the news which he has on in the background so I'm an expert on the Middle East and Keir Starmer, both of which are sources of incredulous irritation for him. He's 85 on Sunday, and a nuclear test veteran, so there's that as well. And Oak Island, and anything UFO related. To be fair, I've inherited his love of anything a bit fringe so we do have some great debates - fortunately he's still the full shilling bar typical repetition, and I've been throwing in Lucy Letby to keep it fresh.

DMIL when she still lived with us was all Tipping Point and that programme where a woman would pounce on people at the tip and take their junk away to renovate and sell - and then the original owner would awkwardly accept the profit and mumble about "charidee"..... kind of miss that.

My late Nana had TV scheduling down to a fine art, skipping channels between soaps, news, Panorama and Newsnight back when we only had 3 then 4 channels. I fought for TOTP every week as a teenager ( we lived with her). Ah, happy days...

Although Keir Starmer is getting royally on my tits by proxy at the moment.....
