Does POA end when the person dies, or does it give you some powers after?

It ends. Then the will takes effect and you have to get probate to do anything after death.

Thanks. I’m executor, so I suppose that’s how I will be able to pay bills etc.

It ends . However if they have a significant amount of assets any debts can be paid out of that . Probate maybe needed first depending on the value of the assets

You can’t pay bills out of the estate until you have probate. Everything is frozen. After you have probate, you pay all debts in a certain order. If anything is left it’s distributed to the beneficiaries as specified in the will.

There’s one exception - since funeral expenses are the first in the list of debts to be paid, most banks and building societies will pay the funeral director’s bill. It’s supposed to be strictly funeral expenses but some funeral directors I understand will add the wake to their bill.
