Hi can anyone recommend a cordless lightweight freestanding stick type hoover. It's for picking up food dropped by my dad but my mum can't get down to use the little handheld one and says the cylinder type give her back ache.

Looking for one that doesn't require a wall cradle as don't know where to fit it.

I was going to say vax blade. It doesn’t technically need a cradle because it can just be propped up in the corner of a room I suppose.

I use a GTech AirRam. It's incredibly light yet powerful. No cradle.

What about an old-fashioned (non-electric) carpet sweeper. Something like this:

Oh wow I didn't know they still made carpet sweepers. That might have worked actually.

Have ordered a bush corded one from Argos now as only £40 as needed a quick solution but am still interested in suggestions

You don't need to attach the Dyson to the wall, can just be plugged in to the charger. I wouldn't be without mine.

I have this I have a disability and its the best hoover I've had, I also have the hand held for the stairs or just picking up.

Similar to your situation so I got my parents the Gtech AirRam.

G Tech do a cordless electric sweeper with a long and adjustable handle. They pick up crumbs, bits of paper and anything else similar. I love mine
