Does anyone have much experience about applying for social housing?

DF is in 70's and been living in a mobile home for years but his health is failing him and wants to apply for a social housing flat. He has about £25k savings but some of that has been saved for a new (used) car that he needs, his is v old, too big and knackered.

Would he be better off getting his car sorted first, before applying? I think if his savings were below the threshold he would get some housing benefit but not sure how it works if he applies, then buys a new car and that sends his savings below the limit.

I’m not sure he would qualify if he has savings that high

There's no harm in applying. there is often more social housing available for over 55's.

Yes of course apply for it definitely like post says above. I just don’t know if savings would be an issue but I’m not overly educated on it. But yes please go for it and apply

Savings won't be an issue for qualifying for SH, however it may be an issue for HB.

He wouldn't be eligible for housing benefit until savings drop below 16k ( I think the same for most local authorities) so if he's needing help to pay the rent then yes it would be bets to buy the car first.
