COVID and COPD

My mother has reasonably severe COPD. They have recently come down with COVID. I'm extremely worried, is there anyone else who has been in this position, is there anything I can do to help / do we call 111 or wait it out to see if it gets worse?

Thanks

I hope your mum has had all her vaccinations.
Have you got an oximeter, if not get one.
Is she eligible for anti virals?
I'd phone 111 for advice.

Do you have a sats monitor and know what is normal for her? If you don't, I'd get one and get her checking several times a day. Any drops - straight to hospital.

Has she been told that she is more vulnerable to COVID - these people should have been identified as they are eligible for COVID specific medication. For COPD this would be people on NIV, long term oxygen or having several courses of steroids in a year.

If this applies to her you need to phone 111 to get the meds precribed and delivered.

Oh I don't know about antivirals - I'll look into this. Thank you.

They have an oximeter so will keep and eye on that too. It's just such a worry, we've been so careful for so long.

My mum has also recently had Covid. She has COPD and had a third of one lung removed ten years ago due to cancer. We feared the worst but she fairly sailed through it!

@MrsLiam I'm really glad to hear that x

The ‘rescue pack’ that she will have been given by her GP will have all the instructions in it if or when she gets C19. There’s steroids and ABs to take and I think an emergency number. My Dad has COPD, he got a letter from the NHS as well on what to do.

EmotionalBlackmail · 04/06/2023 15:39

Do you know if she's viewed as more vulnerable to it? There's extra stuff in place if so?

DH has COPD (very well-controlled) and I shielded him until we were fully vaccinated. When we eventually both caught it he barely had symptoms whereas I was quite poorly!

Worriedmummyof2 · 04/06/2023 18:02

Yes, she is classed as vulnerable unfortunately. At the moment, she's taken the rescue pack medication and I think it's a waiting game.

Oxygen levels at the moment look good so that's one positive. I feel awful as I've gone down now too and think I must be where she caught it from 😪

If you’ve gone down second, isn’t it more likely you got it from her? In any case, put it out of your mind, you don’t have time to be worrying about such things at the moment
