Evening!

Looking for some advice about books - long story short, need some recommendations of where I can buy large print books that are also lightweight and not super thick/heavy to make up for the larger font..

More info:

My parents have both spent the last couple of months in and out of hospital, although seem to be on the mend now.. 🤞🏻

My dad in particular is in respite at the moment to get some physio to help him walk again.
He is struggling with his strength, and although he has a kindle he doesn't seem to want to use it. I've dropped some books off to him, including a Dan brown one but he says that it's too heavy and he needs something with larger print, that isnt too big or heavy. And all of the larger print books I've come across have been bigger pages (which he also cant cope with)...

I may well be asking the impossible, and may have to push for him to use his kindle if there are no other solutions..

But if anyone can help it'd be much appreciated. I'd normally pop to the shops to actually see some but obviously can't at the moment!

How about some kind of slope or special cushion to rest the book on? He could have a wheeled table in front of his chair to rest it on.

It could be that he no longer has the concentration for reading. I know my DF stopped reading altogether.

How about trying him with Audio Books?

ZombiePara · 12/03/2021 23:31

Bunny I would be tempted to agree as he seems to have lost interest in a lot lately.. but he specifically asked for me to drop some books off for him..

Mosaic thank you, thats a good idea-I'll have to contact the ward to see what the set up is, and if there would be the ability for him to have that easily to use!

Kindle would definitely be your best bet

Would he feel better about using the Kindle if you opened a book in it so all he had to do was open the cover and the book appeared (assuming you have a cover that automatically switches is on)?

This is what I do for my DM. She can't navigate the kindle at all but can read a book if I do this.

No idea on large print lightweight books though sorry. I have to read with a large print and never found any lightweight ones. They are usually big and very heavy.

HiPieInTheSky · 13/03/2021 09:07

Sorry but large print books are all going to be heavy and cumbersome for your father. They are more expensive to buy as well. If your still wanting to get some, hopefully soon your local library will be open.

Try again with the kindle if you can

What you want is the books on A4 paper so he only has to have a few pages at a time. Depending on what type of books he likes many pdfs are available online although normally out of print classics.

Try the RNIB for help, they may have other ideas.

I think I am going to have to go down the audiobook route eventually.

He does have a kindle, however he hasn't used it over the last couple of months (cant remember why not but thinks it is due to it turning on/off whenever it wants to...

I've got a new one on order for him, with a little handhold behind it so hopefully that'll help...

If not it'll be a rethink and audio books... and with that the fight of headphones 😂🤦🏼‍♀️
