Mum is a bit lonely and wanting to rent out a room in her 2 bed house. Where can we advertise for someone reputable? I'm worried she is vulnerable to scammers. Ideas?

My elderly Mum has had lodgers for several years, via spareroom.com Really, you just need to be very careful (deposit, references etc.) There's always a risk though. Out of around 10 people she's had trouble from 2. I couldn't do it myself.

No idea where you would advertise really. I'd be asking fir a credit check and a print out from PNC to show that they haven't got any convictions.

AgeUK does a homeshare scheme that matches an elderly person with a spare room with a younger person who in return for reduced rent will do about ten hours of work - be it in ther house, or help with shopping etc. Is that of interest?

Nurses? Local hospital?

The AgeUK scheme sounds like what you are looking for? Having a lodger is not necessarily going to help your Mum feel less lonely if she ends up with someone who works long hours and spends all their time in their room, although maybe your Mum just wants the security of having someone else nearby.

Will definitely check out the AgeUK scheme
