Feel a bit of a fraud to be on this topic, inlaws live in Italy so we have not had to care for them.
Last week FIL was admitted to a hospice, he seemed to be perking up, but has deteriorated today. MiL has been sent home, the feeling is that he will not make it through the night.
Suggestions as what (not) to say to her and DH would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear your sad news, is your mil in Italy, I would call her and just chat, see how she is, does she need anything. Support her If she wants to go back to the hospice or if she wants tostay at home. Will your dh be flying over to Italy to see him or to help with arrangements. Tell her she can call youFlowers anytime.

Thanks Holey , DH on the phone to her now, the hospice feels that it is better if she stays away, so she is at home crying. A neighbour will be coming round later.
Bil is flying over tomorrow, DH has to be in Northern Europe on Sunday til Wednesday, so he is really struggling with what to do.

Your advice is much appreciated.

My FIL has a terminal illness. It is very hard to know what to say in this situation as there is really nothing to take the pain away. Just listen and tell her that you are thinking about her. Reassure her that he's probably in the best place and with the best people right now. Offer to say a prayer for him and her. It's all you can do. All the best OP. 💐

Thanks guys, he is still alive today, we are just waiting for the worst now.

Seems a bit hard that the hospice has sent her away. 😢

He left us this afternoon, Mil and Bil were with him. He went peacefully in his sleep.
Thanks for all of your support.

my condolences to you all Flowers

do keep posting if you need to.

in terms of what to say, I don't know - my dad died 3 weeks ago and I've appreciated every contact, but mum hasn't so much, though perhaps she will later on. At the moment, if people say "what can I do to help" she says "nothing" which I know is true, but I'm worried it will put people off offering help again!

Sorry for your loss Grace.

Funeral is on Friday, kids and I are planning on lighting a candle and remembering him after school.
