MIL is going out carrying a lot of cash. How can we stop this happening? We lock it in her safe place and explain what is an acceptable amount when going for haircut etc but she keeps going out with excessive amounts

The only realistic way is not to let her have access to that much cash. But that only works if you're near enough to dish out more as needed. I'm assuming from the way you phrase your OP that you have PoA and are managing her financial affairs. If she is still managing her affairs and drawing out large amounts from the machine, then I'm not sure there's much you can do.

Unless she does not have mental capacity and you have PofA, then you cannot and should not try to stop this happening.

Took her to a hospital appointment today and it's happened again. Had words gently about how risky and unecessary it is. I can't really stop her doing it

How much cash is she carrying? Is it an amount she could afford to lose?

She's putting herself at risk as the money is in clear plastic money bags, very visible when she goes in her bag. It's been noticed by several people now and commented on
