Chair help

My dad is having occasional incontinence issues and currently has a leather chair, which means I am not able to clean it properly to get rid of the smell. I have suggested getting him a new chair. I thought fabric would be better as I could vax it clean when the accidents happen. But I have no idea where to get one for him. He needs one which is slightly higher than a normal chair to get out of easier. Do you have any suggestions please of places I could take him to look for them?

I'm not too sure about a chair that is higher then normal but my nan had rise and recline chair which are good if trouble getting in and out of chair also can buy covers which are absorbent and machine washable for incontinence problems which may help aswell?

Have a look for local mobility aids suppliers. They sell upright higher chairs and also risers to lift them up. Have you got contact with an ot? They can make useful suggestion.

You can buy chairs from mobility equipped suppliers, but if he wants a chair which looks more "ordinary", your best bet may be an independent furniture seller. However, you may find that if the chair will be made to order with the frame and fabric you choose, so you have a delay in getting it.

If you say roughly part of the country you are in, people may have recommendations for both types of retailers.

Depending on where he lives, you might be able to get advice from an OT or physio via his doctor, e.g. on risers, cushions or incontinence products, e.g. washable chair pads that absorb fluids. Try Age UK, NRS, Homecraft Rolyon or Unforgettable for buying this sort of equipment.

It is an occupational therapist, physio is a physiotherapist. You can get leather look washable chairs, you could buy either a riser recliner chair which has hand controls that lift the legs, back, seat up so they are easy to get in and out of. You can get leg raisers which are block type things that fit under the chair legs.

Surely the place to start is incontinence pads? Either on him, or on the chair.

You could buy the pads that go on a bed and put them in a nice cover for him to sit on, on the chair. That way, you only have to wash the cover (and him).

Unfortunately he is in a stage of denial that it is happening, even though we both know it is, so incontinence pads have been mentioned but swiftly thrown out as an option! So I'm trying to make life easier for clean up if and when it happens. Thanks for the options so far, I've been looking at them.

In the meantime you can get chair raisers for the legs if you’re not getting a new chair immediately. Also would he sit on a few blankets? Not as obvious as an incontinence pad, but can absorb moisture and be chucked in the wash

This is the principle of woollen nappy covers for use with washable nappies, I found it very successful. He wouldn't realise the purpose!
