Calling all piano / music teachers - advice for a 12 year old looking to join a band!

My DS has had a very traditional musical education and plays in the school orchestra etc. He is now starting to really get into pop music, writing his own songs etc.
He tends to write using his guitar but is increasingly messing around on the piano and wants to join a band which doesn't have a keyboard player (they tend to be overwhelmed with guitarists!).

We are thinking of getting him some piano lessons but the main intention is to help with playing chords /keyboards rather than reading classical piano music etc.
The problem is we are getting conflicting advice - some people advising us to go for a "Jazz piano" teacher straight away but the music teacher at school is saying he should start with some classical/traditional piano lessons before moving to a more jazz/pop approach.

Does anyone have any experience in this area or can provide advice?

Most classical teachers will have a go at both. Ours does and i know of a couple of others that do. There are lots of keyboard lessons on youtube that you can use as well to back it up. I would try and find a teacher that would be happy to teach both.
