Please tell me the top 5 things you want your child's Reception class teacher to be!!

As part of one of my uni assignments we have to write an essay on what makes an effective Reception Class teacher and would love your views please. I am using my own too, but the uni won't need to know that!!

Anyone who shares their views will stay anonymous and only be referred to as parent 1,2,3 etc.

Thank you!

Calm, caring, firm, fair, fun, have eyes in the back of his/her head, be able to recognise children's different needs and skills, enthusiastic (but not hyper and OTT).... pretty much the same as I'd hope for most primary teachers except that Reception teachers also need to be able to tick 113 or so boxes for each child and make post-it note observations whilst simultaneously encouraging child-led learning through play!

so i would want ALL school teachers to be all of the above.

what i want in addition for a reception teacher is good communication with parents. I found the who 'starting school' situation completely bewildering because of lack of information about how things work. Fortunately I knew lots of parents with kids already at the school and they helped me out. Really little things like not knowing what they are expected to bring in (pe kit, water bottle, snacks etc) all add up to a general feeling of uncertainty. IME reception age kids are dreadful at telling their parents about what goes on in school and so any info that the teacher can provide is really helpful in making the transition to starting school helpful. Our school does has a system of one afternoon a week when the classroom is open for parents - would have been great if they had told us about it! I know this may sound a bit 'it is all about me not the kids' but I am a firm believer that parents should be very involved in education and that how things are set up in reception sets the tone for the rest of the child's education. If you start off feeling like it is normal to have good interaction with the teacher then that is is very good start!

will stop rambling now
