I wrote to the school on receipt of the bill saying we simply couldn't afford that level of increase and were considering giving notice.
2 days later they replied and have reduced the increase for us

According to the school newsletter that I read today our fee increase will be between 2.3% (national pay award figure) and 3% (educational expenses figure). I can't understand why some schools are seeking increases in the region of 8% in this economic climate. Ds's school has had projects curtailed because of a fall in numbers (8% down on full school roll at the moment).

because they are greedy!

Got my letter today. it is 3% with a note to say we "will be kept informed of any future changes that might affect our planned school fees from September"!

Does that mean 3% but lets wait and see what the other local schools do and increase it if we are lagging?

Would I be in cloud cuckoo land if I thought that maybe the letter means they might decide to decrease them if a load of parents complain that any increase in this climate is unjustified and threaten to move withdraw their children?

BeenBeta, and others - the schools themselves have been hit by the financial climate!
Endowments and interest income will have crashed, fundraising has been impossible across many sectors, heat and light has risen, insurance has risen, maintenance costs have risn, they will have had to absorb bad debts...what do you expect?
