I've been elected to the board of Governors - now what?

I'm amazed. I put myself forward as I have an interest in doing it, the more involved I am with ds's school, the better in my book.

But I'm genearally ignored at the school gates, didn't think anyone would vote for me (there were 4 places, 6 candidates).

Maybe only me and my childminder voted (she put herself forward too, don't know yet if she was successful).

Now, what do I actually have to do?

DH is a governor @ DS school.

He is one of the church governors ie not as a parent governor. If you want to know any answers to queries I can ask him.

He is in charge of Curriculum commitee,

And is on the admissions commitee.

He finds it very interesting

Will you have a specialism? (is that a proper word??)

Um, don't know. The application form stated that they were looking to improve representation of disabled people on the board, so that'll be me then

DH does curriculum cos he is a teacher and so knows stuff about it IYSWIM

Finance is done by a bloke who works in a bank and the one before that was accountant

I'm a parent governor at a secondary school. I don't know if all schools are the same but I was given half a forest worth of paper when I started & expected to sort out my own training. It's quite daunting. I still haven't arranged my induction course 2 years on, but I'm on the list for September.

Basically you need to turn up for meetings and they should tell you what they want you to do! Congratulations anyway

Congratulation Easy, I've been a parent governor for just over 12 months now and have really enjoyed it. I have been chair of finance since September 04 as I work Educational Finance for the LEA.

If you aren't given a forest of paperwork to read through (I was), ask for copies of the previous years minutes for the full governing body meetings. This shouldn't be much, but you will at least be up to date on previous matters.

Our governors have a policy that each governor sits on 2 committees, make sure you tell them at your first meeting which one(s) you want.
