Anyone want to join a year 13 UCAS THREAD?

We can join in stressing about ucas forms interviews etc?

I am finding it all a very steep learning curve - we could support one another - celebrate and commiserate?

Milliways thanks for that... really calmed me ...sounds like they look after them then?

PosyPetrovaPauline · 15/06/2010 21:29

Hello all just checking in - hoping exams all going well!

ajandjjmum · 16/06/2010 15:30

Hi Posy
Was wondering how everyone was coping at the moment! DS seems much less negative - if not exactly positive - about these exams than he was the January ones.
3 out of 7 down now.
Hope all of our dc are coping well.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 16/06/2010 20:09

pleased to hear it a and J so have you got one doing A and one gcse?

DS has been ok about his - but has not worked as hard for his maths (c4) as he could have done and sweating a bit now ( although at work atm )

dd has a few GCSE's ( year 10) and a few modules and ( dare i say it) seems to have at least lifted her pinkie which she has so far NOT done so things looking up all round!

Just wishing ds did not have darned A* which is a pain

ajandjjmum · 17/06/2010 10:54

DS doing A levels and DD doing AS levels - so high stress levels!

DS is doing C4 tomorrow, but has Physics in the morning, so is pretty stressed at the moment. Only two more after that and then we can all breathe - at least until August!

Does your DS need an A* for uni?

mumoverseas · 17/06/2010 11:13

well done on all the offers and good luck with the exams tomorrow.
DS has his last (AS) exam tomorrow and bad mum that I am I can't remember what it is
DS going on some (weird) retreat with his school for the DC thinking of Oxbridge in a few weeks so they can ponder their choices and discuss PS etc. Sounds a bit odd to me but if it helps with the application then thats fine by me.

JGBMum · 17/06/2010 14:43

Yes good luck to everyone, at least they are all coming to an end now.
DS has his last AS exam next Tuesday, but then they start straight into A2 work. DS has managed to get a place on a head start course at Southampton in early July so he will miis a weeks work but hopefully it will help towars his UCAS form in the autumn.

webwiz · 17/06/2010 16:03

I'm glad that its all coming to an end for this year here as well - DD2 has two Maths exams tomorrow Stats I and Mechanics II which are both meant to be at the same time. The 6 of them taking both will be kept in a room for lunch away from everyone else.

I'm a bit annoyed at school for getting them back in this week to start A2 work and to have a day off timetable to do UCAS stuff when AS exams haven't actually finished yet. At least she has 4 hours of Maths lessons today so hopefully that will be more helpful than starting History coursework

Best of luck to everyone in year 13 and hope they get their first choices. The only good thing is that UCAS usually update the track system very early on results day so DD1 knew by 7am that she had got into her first choice uni. Every minute counts when you're waiting for results

ajandjjmum · 17/06/2010 17:08

I'm not sure I shall want to know webwiz! I can feel the butterflies already!

PosyPetrovaPauline · 17/06/2010 20:27

a and j i am pretty sure i have heard of people knowing the night before...i am wondering if ds will just go into school as per gcse - think a bit of camaradarie (sp) is good at times like that

DS does need the A* unfortuately which is a real bummer and it can only be in one of his sciences or maths

GRRRR at C4 - ds has it tomorrow and is feeling stressed!

webwiz · 17/06/2010 21:28

DD1 found out her place was confirmed at 7am and then went into school at 10am to get her results and found out she'd actually missed two of her grades - so glad she did it that way round although she did check about 100 times that they didn't take the confirmation away until the official letter came in the post the next day.

Good luck for C4 tomorrow for your DS Posy - DD2 is quite good at predicting what marks she has dropped in Maths exams so we at least get an early indication of how she has done. Not like history when she hasn't a clue!

Lilymaid · 17/06/2010 21:36

DS was in the first year that the UCAS confirmations went live before the students could get their results from school. He checked (system kept crashing), saw his place was confirmed and so knew what his grades were. Going into school to collect results wasn't so exciting, but he then disappeared into town and reappeared (somewhat worn) around 48 hours later.

DS2 (going to university this autumn) is on a gap year, so has an unconditional offer ... and for the first time for several years we don't have to organise our holidays around results day and DS2 will be thousands of miles away on one of his gap year trips.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 17/06/2010 21:50

i see ...oh wise women...

so does the UCAS thing just say that the university has accepted them ...not the actual grades?

PosyPetrovaPauline · 17/06/2010 21:51

webwiz - so did your dd not get the grades but the university still wanted her?? (they must have loved her!)

Lilymaid · 17/06/2010 22:05

I don't think that UCAS shows the grades only that you have been accepted. DS1 needed 3 As, so he knew that he'd got them when he looked on UCAS on results day.

webwiz · 17/06/2010 22:05

Yep my DD was one of those dreadful lazy teens who fall on their feet after driving everyone around them to despair. Not only had she missed her first choice offer but her second choice as well! No idea why the university still took her but I wagged my finger at her and said for goodness sake make the most of this opportunity. I think some universities are reluctant to go to clearing with places and would rather still take students that have been selected through their own process.

She is now transformed into someone who works and plays hard with her lazy ways behind her. She has already passed her first year on what she has done throughout the course before her exam results are even counted (they are out in a couple of weeks). Her advice to me was I should have "chilled" about things a bit more - aaargh!

PosyPetrovaPauline · 17/06/2010 22:24

webwiz !! wow thanks for that very informative ...

my dd (year 10) sounds very similar ...there is hope

mumoverseas · 18/06/2010 05:15

webwiz that is very useful information ref the grades. A bit odd that two maths exams are on at the same time, surely that shoudn't happen?

JGBMum that course at Southampton sounds interesting. DS is going to their open day on 3rd July but hadn't mentioned any other events there. What does your DS want to do?

webwiz · 18/06/2010 08:11

Obviously DD2's school are making them take a weird combination of modules mumoverseas!

She appears to be taking only 2 AS papers for Further maths and 4 A2 papers - isn't this making life more difficult?! She is still reeling from the teacher suggesting Mechanics 3 for next year (Mechanics is not popular is our house!)

ajandjjmum · 18/06/2010 16:50

Posy
How did your ds find C4? Ds said it was 'bad'.

JGBMum · 18/06/2010 18:34

MOS - he wants to study engineering (aeronautical and/or alternative technology), the school recommended the head start courses to all their Oxbridge group. Mind you, reading threads earlier this week I don't know if his grades are sufficient for any RG never mind Oxbridge . So I'm hoping this course will show that he is interested in engineering, and will hopefully work in his favour.

Headstart link here

JGBMum · 18/06/2010 18:37

webwiz - lol re Mechanics 3; DSs Maths group have made the teacher promise they wont have to do S2 next year as they all hated S1 so much.

MABS · 18/06/2010 19:31

dh is aeronautical engineer, now instructor, let me know if you need any help JGB
