Anyone want to join a year 13 UCAS THREAD?

We can join in stressing about ucas forms interviews etc?

I am finding it all a very steep learning curve - we could support one another - celebrate and commiserate?

Yes! He got in to St John's to study Classics. A matriculation offer.

NotAnOtter · 07/01/2010 21:18

wow get reading your latin texts now kids!

brimfull · 07/01/2010 21:28

not her first choice I don't think
she preferred the feel of Sheffield
has applied to reading, cardiff and swansea as well

Swedington · 08/01/2010 10:57

Apparently the Latin ps wasn't wholly in Latin. Just the paragraph about his love for his subject. Prob a nice touch? He is a v bright lad and also got a distinction in the maths STEP paper even though it's not his first love.

Ds1 keeps changing his mind about first choice- a good thing prob to decide at post offer open days.

A quick question about university finding - does anyone know, if you moved as recently as Oct 09, does this matter when it comes to applying for university funding? Does the new borough want to see you've lived there a certain amount of time or doesn't it matter?

TIA

brimfull · 08/01/2010 13:33

shouldn't make any difference if both addresses are in England
If moving from England to Wales or Scotland where tuition is cheaper for residents it may make a difference

lowrib · 08/01/2010 17:01

Moved from Scotland to England (wrong way - gah!)

I spoke to Student Finance England incidentally, and they said it would be fine.

selectivememory · 08/01/2010 20:04

Swedington, glad to hear the whole statement wasn't in Latin!!! Is obvs v v bright though and well deserving of the place

larry5 · 08/01/2010 22:38

Dd has applied to Cardiff, Aberyswyth. Glamorgan, Keele and Plymouth to do Mathematics and has so far got offers from Aber, Plymouth and Keele but her first choice is Keele so she is delighted.

Snorter · 09/01/2010 15:53

well done larry5 DD!

RustyBear · 09/01/2010 19:41

Even more congratulations due to those who have had offers in the light of this report

ajandjjmum · 10/01/2010 10:02

Oh no - that's already started me worrying about dd next year!

brimfull · 10/01/2010 10:08

that article is depressing

dd is deferring entry unitl 2011 -will it be worse?
different govt possibly

Swedington · 10/01/2010 10:23

Well done Larrys dd. She/you must be delighted.

Rusty - thanks for linking that article. Interesting.

RustyBear · 10/01/2010 17:49

btw, totally off-topic, but Exeter is definitely a MN-friendly university- DD reports that there is mooncup-recommending graffiti on the toilet doors....

JustGettingByMum · 10/01/2010 18:05

Re the Telegraph Report - why oh why do they keep moving the goal posts?
And if another report comes out saying the courses are getting easier then I think I shall scream!! [rant over]
DS has friend staying over tonight so that hopefully we can get them both to school tomorrow for their first AS module exams.
Good luck to everyone taking exams this week, I hope they go well.

ajandjjmum · 10/01/2010 18:49

Hope it goes well for all the AS-ers tomorrow - dd is amongst them - and so far the heavy snowfalls haven't arrived, so she should be able to get in!

NotAnOtter · 10/01/2010 21:09

yes good luck all

ughhh ...i am feeling a wee bit stressed now that the reality of the A* is actually upon ds

anyway lets hope snowfall is minimal - ds is 12 miles from school!

boogienights · 10/01/2010 21:19

Lots of luck to all doing AS tomorrow- we have 3 staying o/n here to help get there on time.
DD has her maths- seems ok so far...
Has interviews at Bristol, Sheffield and Southampton for chem, waiting to hear from bath and Loughborough.
Struggling a bit with this as her friends all have offers w/o interviews, also feels pressure to keep up with DS ( 14 A* GCSe, 7 A's at A level- now at oxford)although we tell her he is just weird!
How has anyone else coped with this sibling competitiveness?
DD pretends is not competing whilst secretly really anxious!

brimfull · 10/01/2010 21:24

7 A' levels

wow
what is he studying at Oxford?

boogienights · 10/01/2010 21:31

PPE- loves it , but especially loves the sport, its right for him- but he does cast a big shadow for DD!

NotAnOtter · 10/01/2010 21:31

boogienights - yes we do

dd drifts the other way - kind of 'if i cant beat it i cant be bothered to try'

good luck to your dd and friends

Swedington · 11/01/2010 00:29

Good luck for exams this week. Hope the snow holds off for them.

DS2 asked me to check whether his provisional GCSE choices would be suitable for Cambridge, before he makes his final choice. I nearly fell over. It feels nice that they like v different subjects and things. It feels impossible for me to see them as being in any form of competition as they are entirely different. I don't think they feel any competition either.

I am very guilty of asking DS1 whether got his offer from LSE/Cambridge/Oxford/UCL yet. I hate myself for asking. Every time I ask I promise myself I won't ask again. But three days later, I ask again. Gah.

ajandjjmum · 11/01/2010 09:56

boogienights
We have this with ds (17) and dd (16) - she always comments that M is the bright one. Not to 7 A level standard though - that is amazing!
It is hard, and I think she does feel that whatever she does won't be as good. But the truth is that ds works harder consistently, and dd sometimes seems beaten before she starts. I suppose it's her confidence, but you'd never think that she was lacking to hear her speak!
Difficult one to balance.

boogienights · 11/01/2010 14:58

subject choices at GCSe do matter for oxbridge- they mut do a language, and need to get at least 5 a* at GCSE- so as always should od what are best at
