Anyone want to join a year 13 UCAS THREAD?

We can join in stressing about ucas forms interviews etc?

I am finding it all a very steep learning curve - we could support one another - celebrate and commiserate?

DS1s application for anthropology and sociology at Durham has been passed to a college so fingers crossed that it will be confirmed as an offer soon. Anyone know how long this might take. He is still waiting for his first choice which is also at durham but Combined Honours in Social Sciences. Still this one is his backup cos entry requirements are lower. He is determined its Durham or nowhere!

NotanOtter · 29/12/2009 21:49

fantastic - which college has he applied to?

Jopeg · 29/12/2009 23:02

We took DD to an open day at Durham, we/I really liked it but she thought it too hilly (hot summer day)and was feeling sleep deprived so crossed it off her list!

She had quite a long list so we weren't too worried, good luck to your son it sounds like he really wants to go there.

ajandjjmum · 30/12/2009 11:18

Snap lazymum - and well done your ds! We're waiting to hear from St. Cuths - although I suppose it'll be longer over the Christmas break. It seems that the offers can take 2 - 4 weeks, according to Student Room.
We love Durham - I'm just worried that our idle threat of visiting every other weekend may have put him off!!!

lazymumofteenagesons · 30/12/2009 11:45

He's applied to Van Mildert - a hill college with all single rooms. We had a look round the college and it felt welcoming. He liked the bar and the fact that there was a student in his pyjamas playing on the playstation at 11:30am in the bar!! The no sharing was what swung it and some of the rooms are en-suite (he takes after his mother!). Its not that popular as a first choice I think so hopefully they will accept. God knows what they base decisions on cos lack of space meant his PS has very little about himself.

Jopeg aren't they always sleep deprived at this age?

Jopeg · 30/12/2009 16:06

Jopeg aren't they always sleep deprived at this age?

Yes, you are right, maybe she just didn't like Durham. She got off on a bad footing should have prebooked and didn't, many of the other students had spent the night there and got to know each other already which I don't think helped.

Swedington · 30/12/2009 16:58

I'm a Cuthbertsman. V good choice.

DS has at last gone to the library to do some revision today. He really is leaving it all a bit late. Pffft.

NotanOtter · 30/12/2009 21:34

sounds heavenly lazymum

swedes ds seems to have done very little revision which is worrying...

meanwhile i am barely sleeping....

Swedington · 30/12/2009 22:02

NAO - Oh no you must sleep. I always sleep. I never worry to that extent.

Can I have a little meh moan? We have declined a really cracking NY eve party and a nice NY eve dinner party gathering because we thought it would be mean to leave DS2 on his own (albeit with a babysitter) as he is that inbetweeny age (14). DS1 is going out with his girlfriend and some mates. Well this evening DS2 announced that he is going to his cousin's 14 year old NY party. Pffffft.

So we are going to be in watching the White Heather show. Tapping our toes and wondering what the heck happened.

NotanOtter · 30/12/2009 22:14

that calls for a really great film and a bottle of champers!

Sounds like bliss to me - a couple of teens out for the night

ajandjjmum · 31/12/2009 13:00

Our two think we're very sad - happy to have a quiet evening at home while they're out partying!!! As we pointed out, they do need sober chauffeurs!

Happy new year all.

NotanOtter · 31/12/2009 13:02

oxford results all in and ds school did badly

only 2 out of 8.....

Swedington · 01/01/2010 18:53

Happy New Year to you all. Thank you all for your hand-holding and excellent information and advice over the past few months. It really has been a steep learning curve. You are all so nice.

NAO thank you for starting the thread. I suspect it will be really useful for others next year too.

Perhaps when it's all over we should meet up for a glass of champagne to celebrate. They might all be at UCL together or Durham?

NotanOtter · 01/01/2010 21:48

thanks swedelington!

ds is watching tv and seems positively lighthearted about modules in january - or should i say in a fortnight?

yes swedes - it really could happen

where does ds1 have offers??

ajandjjmum · 02/01/2010 19:06

We could have our own 'Freshers Mums' week!!!

Swedington · 03/01/2010 14:27

ajandjjmum - Excellent idea.

Lilymaid · 03/01/2010 14:33

Sorry, have to go to work that week, can't spend that time on a diet of strange cocktails and visits to cheesy night clubs!

lazymumofteenagesons · 03/01/2010 15:31

Mums freshers week sounds good.

I made the mistake of giving them COD6 from the dogs for Xmas. Result -no revision for jan modules being done and PS3 is overheating.

At the age of 12/13 and doing common entrance DS1 seemed much more diligent and focussed than he is now. Maybe I was more relaxed too??

Swedington · 03/01/2010 15:46

Lazymum - I still operate a ban from Sunday 5pm until Friday evening on the PS3 and all other handheld games. They still manage to waste time, just not on PS3.

Swedington · 05/01/2010 19:06

DS1 called to interview for Shef. Huzzah. 4 interviews from 4 applications.

hocuspontas · 05/01/2010 22:04

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

DD1 has a conditional offer from Exeter! And only needs BBB! It seems like a lifetime ago that we have been waiting. She has had two offers from Bournemouth but this was the one we have been waiting for!

I don't know if anyone remembers me from further up but dd1 was nagging her teachers to up her predicted grades. They did so and then a week after all the stuff went off the teachers got back an AS paper that had been sent off to be re-marked. 10 marks had been added! So it took her C to a good B apparently. The teachers then wrote off to UCAS or the universities (I'm not sure which) to explain! I don't know if this helped (dd1 thinks it did) but all's well that ends well!

I feel euphoric! Dd1 feels so much more confident with the 5 modules she has to take this month now thank goodness!

BTW congratulations to all the offers made on this thread since I've been away!

Lilymaid · 05/01/2010 22:47

Congratulations to your DD on her Exeter offer (probably the best university in the world, but I'm biased). DS now has all his offers and is taking retake modules this month/Feb to improve his A2 grades (he was less than 1% to 2% off his hoped for grades so it seemed worth trying again with some tutoring). If he succeeds, he will then choose probably between Sheffield and East Anglia. If his grades don't move up he will probably go to Keele or Hull, so it wouldn't be the end of the world.

hocuspontas · 06/01/2010 12:45

Thanks Lilymaid! Glad to hear it is the best

Good luck with the retakes!

brimfull · 06/01/2010 13:09

dd still waiting

did yours hear through the ucas site or their email?

hocuspontas · 06/01/2010 14:39

UCAS site here. Yesterday dd1 was checking regularly throughout the day as usual then at 7.45pm she got notification of her offer. So they update at odd times!
