sutton coldfield girls versus queen mary's high walsall

has anybody any experience of these 2 schools. got to fill in the LEA forms by 23/10.

we live walking distance from QMHS (15mins) or a30ish minute bus journey to SCGSG. i so preferred SCGSG but can see the benefits of my (v young) 11yo DD being able to hop on a quick bus (every 3-4mins) to school.

academically SCGSG is higher achieving but not that much in the grand scheme.

just wondering if an hour's extra travel each day for my DD justified by the 'betterness' as perceived by me?

does anyone have any ideas/thoughts/experience that can help me?

thanks

I know LOADS of people who went to sutton girls. It was a long time ago tho. Reputation pretty much the same. Think time has been kinder to the uniform - brown much more in vogue now

Can you go at 11 now? Was 12 in my day. You had to do a year in cattle school first unless you were in sutton primary

No Sorry.DH was about to move to birmingham but not anymore.Try doing some advanced search on walsall schools in the talk section by pressing the top right had purple section marked as advanced search.Good luck.

was meaning reputation same as now - always been v good academically

don't know the walsall school. Is that a grammar as well? In which case surely a lot of the choice will be down to actually passing the entrance exams

Which did you prefer the feel of walking around? More importantly, what did yr dd make of them both?

The buses would be a bit of an issue for me - afaik both buses heading towards walsall go all round the wrekin. Used to be the 377 (?) something like that going through new oscott / kingstanding / streetly and a 99 something bus going through aldridge. Bear in mind if yr dd would be doing extra curricular stuff - could be v late and dark getting home

Had the reverse problem, live near Sutton Girls but I really liked Walsall grammar, and so did child. I had to go with childs feelings (and my own!) So has a 1/2 hour journey on bus, not that much is it and child is happy to go. I think you have to go with gut feeling about the school, you are probably right in the long run. Have also bought a 4 wheel drive in case buses fail in the winter.

have a look on the 11 plus exams forum - cant remember the link but if you do advanced search on here it will come up. good section on midlands grammar schools and all sorts of opinions. good luck

Hi, I live in Solihull . Anyone travel to Sutton grammar school from Solihull area. My daughter will appear in 11+ next year. Bit worried about travelling if she gets through. Does anybody know parents hiring a bus or some other arrangements?
