I am curious to know and happy to share what mine get up to.

Actually I was wondering whether the op lets her/his dcs listen to the radio, go to the cinema/theatre.
I like to have a talk radio programme on in the background, especially when I worked from home.

and I still can't see what the op's children do that are any different from children that are allowed to watch tv.

Acinonyx · 07/06/2009 20:55

Yup I have radio 4 unless 'seriously' working or in the car - then it's radio 2. I stopped having radio 4 on with dd around recently as she was picking up on some of the alarming news items. Jeremy Vine is not really preschooler-friendly either - I confess I have occaisionally cried in the car listening to his show. Real laugh a minute.

I'd love to take her to the cinema but she's WAY too easily scared just yet.

Starbear · 07/06/2009 21:12

bruffin Is it really worth thinking about? I've just been out with a variety of little boys.So two siblings were fighting in the back of my car before we got to the park. My lad won't stop talking 'D' kept running off. 'F' was taken home early for being moany. 'E' got sat on by my ds and was crying. 'G' would only eat ice cream and drink hot chocolate. Just a group of little humans, all brought up different ways BUT their parents are my friends with or without T.V's and Ds has a great time. I like a few tips but in general we all have to muddle along! I really just want the best in my opinion for mine and a lot of TV is not good!

thecaty · 07/06/2009 21:19

bruffin, the idea that they do differnt things because the have no tv is not what i have ever said. I am interested in other parents similar to me who regard regular tv watching as unessesary So what keeps those kids busy every day. I know that Children will not play differently if they have a bit of tv.
I will take them to the theatre though they much more enjoy doing their own plays at school once or twice a year as then they are involved and not just a spectator.
I will have the radio on at times but I am aware also that DC's need a lot of time with no noise including background noise and so do we as adults.

cory · 07/06/2009 22:36

thecaty, I think what most of us have been saying is, you can learn these things just as well from those of us who do happen to own televisions, as most children do keep busy without the television most of the time- doing the same sort of things as TV-less children

I didn't notice any change when we did buy a set- except that dd is able to learn a lot more about acting (which is her passion) and I can provide her with French language films

for many parents who don't live within easy reach of a theatre, a television or DVDs will provide that

as for the importance of time with no background noise- your children are lucky not to live in a musical family then

when I was a child there was always background noise: my brother practised his violin for several hours, my mum played the piano, then they got together to play duets...

Starbear · 08/06/2009 08:32

My Ds likes the radio on to play in his room. As a only but, very social kid, he likes Cebbies on the radio and Neil Diamond & Elvis on CD!

treacletart · 08/06/2009 09:08

Starbear No! You've got to stop him listening to cbeebies on the radio. It's ruining my bbc7 mornings! I need classic comedy back!

Acinonyx · 08/06/2009 10:07

''I am aware also that DC's need a lot of time with no noise including background noise and so do we as adults.''

I fine example of the personal opinion repackaged as a general truth. Upon what do you base this sweeping statement about ALL children and adults?

Starbear · 08/06/2009 10:56

treacletart Okay for you, I will. I agree. I cbeebies starts at 5am!!!!! CHILD GO BACK TO BED AND SLEEP! I'm a very bad sleeper and if I woke at 5am I would put on the radio on my headphones and either listen to a story or go back to sleep, no chance any more! It okay, if he needs the radio there is always Fun or Jackie radio so we can have comedy back at 6am. What do you think?

thecaty · 08/06/2009 17:49

Space to think and listen, Acinonyx. The sound produced by birds, the siblings, wind etc.I would put into a different category.
And Acinonyx every truth is stated by somebody first. But of course the fact that silence at times is good for us busy bees has been stated for hundreds of years.
It is time without background noise, Violin practice does not fall into that in my books.
But granted, I could have phrased it better in that respect.

OP posts:
Acinonyx · 08/06/2009 19:12

'every truth is stated by somebody first' - what a fantrastically meaningless and rather pretentious statement. It's not that I think you are necessarily wrong, it's this style of pronouncement of truths from the oracle that grates.

There is something in this kind of anti-popularist intellectual snobbery that just pushes my buttons.

So some kinds of noise, intrusive, irritating or not, are OK because thier source is intellectually or aesthetically acceptable.

Starbear · 08/06/2009 20:22

Acinonyx Bravo. Off to listen to the crime hour while making dinner & Comedy while washing the floor!

Bluestocking · 08/06/2009 20:29

My DS draws all the time, even sitting on the loo!

thecaty · 09/06/2009 00:00

I can add another title to my name thank you Acinonyx.
In the meantime it is great to hear/read some posters read the op.
To hear sound that can be traced to something that you can have a natural relationship to is less intrusive than my 7 year old DD hearing a discussion on radio4 on capitalism. right?
So if the sound in the background is my 10yo DS practising violin she will be able to draw, play or whatever... actually quiet often she takes her lyer and practices it as she is inspired to indirectly by her brothers playing violin. I hope that is better Acinonyx.

OP posts:
bicci · 09/06/2009 06:42

lol @ Acinonyx
thecaty I'm sorry to say but your tone is a bit preachy.
Some people don't have the chance to abolish background noise (and be inspired to play their lyres in the wind.)
People make noise, children more than most and it would be a sad and unnatural place if it wasn't there imo.
A radio 4 programme on capitalism sounds quite interesting for a 10 yr old I think. My dcs have lots of discussions kicked off by something on R4.

cory · 09/06/2009 07:47

but thecaty a discussion on capitalism would have so much quieter than a fullscale concert violin

Acinonyx · 09/06/2009 13:15

Well, thecatyoracle, I played the violin as a child and it was indeed a very irritating noise - clearly your dc are far more talented.

mimsum · 09/06/2009 13:28

the reason the OP is coming across as superior and preachy is that she's dyed-in-the-wool Steiner and if she's like the Steiner parents I've come across in RL genuinely feels sorry for non-Steiner children and is convinced that her way of bringing up children is inherently superior - so you're not going to get very far debating with her ....

bicci · 09/06/2009 14:24

mimsum, in that case, what with thecaty feeling sorry for our inferior status as those not begotten by gnomes or angels or indigo wotnot, is the motive to save us and convert us to lyres, reincarnated felt rainbows and wind whispering?

thecaty · 09/06/2009 16:40

Mimsum and bicci, I suggest that you start your own thread. In fact I feel nothing of the kind I am just a parent like any other going to football matches drinking beer smocking and so on. If what you have said is the only contributions you have to make then thats fine thank you.

OP posts:
MyLovelyHorse · 09/06/2009 17:08

beer smocking!

do Steiner teachers knit smocks made from beer?

Or are you referring to the old favourite swedish pastime of 'bee smacking'?

thecaty · 09/06/2009 18:05

MyLovelyHorse, You are quiet wrong with your asumtions aswell, therefore message 96 applies to you aswell, really.

OP posts:
bicci · 09/06/2009 18:41

thecaty,
Do Steiner teachers have a sense of humour?

I hate to have to tell you, but we can contribute what ever we want, you don't own the thread and however superior you think your wind lyres are, you can't send people to the naughty Steiner step.

Have you been counting posts to get the message 96?

Stranger and stranger.

What should our thread be called do you wonder?
Beer smocking for beginners.

Anyway, there's a taxi outside and he's typing your postcode into his sat nav as I type

wilderduck · 09/06/2009 19:43

No one I know smocks anymore... oh those long evenings round the campfire smocking and bee smacking and making assumptions...

blardy hell, I haven't laughed so much since my auntie caught her left tit in the mangle...
