I'm on my PGCE and it's not going well - anyone willing to help me plan a lesson?

I've got my uni tutor coming in on Tuesday

It needs to be the lesson of my life

The info I've got from the teacher is:

Narrative unit 4 - Stories about Fantasy Worlds - Jack and the Beanstalk

Drama: explore familiar themes and characters through improvisation and role play

Unerstanding and interpreting texts: use syntax and context when reading for meaning. Recognise the main elements that shape different texts.

Creating and shaping texts: use key features of narrative in their own writing. Create short simple texts on paper and on screen that combine words with images (and sounds)

Sentence structure and punctuation: compose and write simple sentences independently to comminucate meaning. Use capital letters and full stops when punctuating simple sentences

Presentation: Use the space bar and keyboard to type their name and simple texts.

That's it.

For a student that's struggling with getting the lessons right - NO other information has been offered and if I'm not wrong, I could have just grabbed the info I have got on the internet anyway cos it's just the curriculum
stuff

I'm pissed off and can't think what to do.... I've got 4 lessons to teach it.

I really wouldn't bother with the ICT objective. I don't see it as hugely helpful to you. Your lesson needs to clearly deomnstrate your ability to move the children on in their learning so what are you TEACHING them and how will they show that they have LEARNED you need to be explicit about the story language you are expecting to see.
I would work whole class for the drama.. writing workshop back to whole class. Plan to support different groups each day. What key features of narrative do you want them to use- how are you going to teach them?

robinpud · 17/05/2009 20:55

popsycal- if sparklebox is banned in your La is primary resources and other site of that ilk?

popsycal · 17/05/2009 20:56

robinpud - no they are not banned
there is a very specific reason
email me

cazzybabs · 17/05/2009 20:57

popsycal - I have emailed you ages ago...I need to KNOW ..... did you get it?

mrsmaidamess · 17/05/2009 20:58

You already seem to have LOTS of ideas here but something done at my school is to write the story on a board/sheet of paper with drawings of characters interspaced with the words. The class can help with this.

It only needs to be very short and a truncated version of the text.

So every literacy lesson the whole class stands up and 'acts' out the story, (eg for the bean stalk doing climbing motions etc).

By the end of the week, they can do it by themselves and even the lower ability ones can base any written work around what they have been physically 'reading' on the carpet.

popsycal I want to know about sparkle box too!

popsycal · 17/05/2009 21:06

email

i have contacted MNHQ about it today actually

Alambil · 17/05/2009 21:16

veraa, I think I may well use that plan actually - it sounds really "creative" and I can build up to it tomorrow by reading the story and discussing the characters / themes so they're ready to think about it independently.

They're used to going on imaginary journeys - last week we went to London

does "use syntax and context when reading for meaning" mean "make sure it makes sense when you read and pause at full stops!" ??

Alambil · 17/05/2009 21:56

oh and also - I've found a quite good plan on TES site; is it plagurising to adapt it slightly?

Every teacher takes the ideas and plans of someone else and tweaks them to suit, whenever possible.

That really used to annoy me as a student, this notion that you are a student so you must come up with absolutely everything on your own, that you can somehow devise whole lesson plans just by thinking about it in you room because you have been to several lectures .

Teachers use loads of books and resources that they or their school have bought and after that they rely on their own experience a lot.

Yes, get a plan and tweak it!

Pekkala · 17/05/2009 22:43

Have emailed you Popsycal.

LewisFan - my teacher has been encouraging me to use/adapt other peoples plans as long as they meeet the needs of the children and the required objectives - she says there's no point in re-inventing the wheel and knackering myself out (more). I heart my teacher.

Pekkala · 17/05/2009 22:51

Oh god. That will be "people's" and "meet"
I can write usually write English but have been working since 7am and I think my head has just exploded.

Thanks to mrz and all the other ideas who have replied to LewisFan -I am making notes, it will all come in so useful for me too.

Pekkala · 17/05/2009 22:52

WTF! That made no sense either. Am switching the computer off and calling it a night!

Alambil · 18/05/2009 00:10

Pekkala that sounds like a good teacher; mine has said "you need to plan from the objectives... see you next week"

Alambil · 18/05/2009 01:25

well I've done it - i've planned the week's literacy lessons.

On monday we are exploring Jack's house / surroundings and drawing it / describing it

Tuesday (obs) we are doing the whole role-play as per Veraa's post and then drawing the castle / describing what jack can see / feel etc

Weds we are acting the story and Thurs we are writing it as a storyboard.....

PHEW!

Now just to plan 4 more lessons............. then bed.
