I'm on my PGCE and it's not going well - anyone willing to help me plan a lesson?

I've got my uni tutor coming in on Tuesday

It needs to be the lesson of my life

The info I've got from the teacher is:

Narrative unit 4 - Stories about Fantasy Worlds - Jack and the Beanstalk

Drama: explore familiar themes and characters through improvisation and role play

Unerstanding and interpreting texts: use syntax and context when reading for meaning. Recognise the main elements that shape different texts.

Creating and shaping texts: use key features of narrative in their own writing. Create short simple texts on paper and on screen that combine words with images (and sounds)

Sentence structure and punctuation: compose and write simple sentences independently to comminucate meaning. Use capital letters and full stops when punctuating simple sentences

Presentation: Use the space bar and keyboard to type their name and simple texts.

That's it.

For a student that's struggling with getting the lessons right - NO other information has been offered and if I'm not wrong, I could have just grabbed the info I have got on the internet anyway cos it's just the curriculum
stuff

I'm pissed off and can't think what to do.... I've got 4 lessons to teach it.

aitch - this is not the half of it!

popsycal · 17/05/2009 18:36

liking cazzybabs too

story sacks are great - good for recapping a story by putting in relevant item - eg beans, leaves, cow, gold coins etc

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 18:37

what a fucking pain in the arse... you'd think that the education we received (sit down quietly and Learn Stuff) had turned out great swathes of dullards. sometimes stuff just isn't fun, i think that's a good lesson.

mrz · 17/05/2009 18:38

popsycal a lot of midland and south coast LEAs have banned Sparklebox too

If you want to use Jack and the Beanstalk look at My Chalk Face you have to pay 10p per item

cazzybabs · 17/05/2009 18:39

mrz - what is wrong with sparklebox?

pointydog · 17/05/2009 18:39

ahhh, aitch. You do have a point

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 18:43

i really am genuinely horrified at all this. it sounds like nursery stuff, not actual educashun.

Sorry cazzybabs I can't post on an open forum

pointydog · 17/05/2009 18:46

People are writing out whole lists of fairly detailed step by step plans here, aitch. They're only talking about one year on from nursery

popsycal · 17/05/2009 18:48

email me

i have also approached MNHQ about this

littlebrownmouse · 17/05/2009 18:49

I'm northern, we haven't blocked sparklebox. Can I ask why its been blocked?(Sorry - hijack).
Advice - story sacks are always good.
Drama - dress kids up in something simple - a necker for jack, hat for mother etc. have all children involved at some point eg. as people in the market.
Get children to work in talk partners to discuss aspects of the story - how is each scene different to places they've been - Jack's house, Giants house etc. Report back to another group or report back what someone else has said so that they listenas well as speak.
Dress kids up, take pictures on digi camera and do a story board that they can write sentences to go with. TA could do this and could take groups out to set up the 'scene'. Write letters (more able) from Jack to his mother describing the places he sees at the top of the beanstalk.
Personally I'd avoid hot seating for little ones that you don't know very well unless its a really short section of the lesson (a few minutes).
Do you have the time/energy/resources to set up a role play area based on the story that a group could play in as part of the lesson? That would meet the object for the less able at least, they don't have to write/produce an end product. Talk comes first, esp for SEN kids who often have language difficulties.
That may or may not be helpful!
Hope it goes well.

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 18:49

true, true. but dd, aged 3, is at nursery and i think she's already doing this stuff. plus i think jack and the beanstalk is a shit story...

pointydog · 17/05/2009 18:54

All of this stuff is to help with the writing, I believe. The writing is probably the key difference.

And the op has been told to do Beanstalk so quit grumbling

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 18:56

ach, well if they don't cover why it's suddenly okay to steal stuff just cos the person looks different from you then it's a lost opportunity. dd1 is already well-versed.

Personally I wouldn't pick Jack and the Beanstalk either but as the class teacher has stipulated that story...

Aitch older children will work on it at a higher level than nursery in the same way as adults would approach a task differently to teenagers ... experience, knowledge and skills

pointydog · 17/05/2009 18:59

it would be an interesting diversion into small philosophical discussion, I agree

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 19:01

sure, mrsz, but all this 'it has to be fun' business appals me. i loved my early schooling because i loved my teachers, i'd have done anything for them. but they didn't bust a gut to make everything a big old laugh for me, i bust a gut for them. seems like the dynamic has changed and imo not nec for the better.

cazzybabs · 17/05/2009 19:13

it is a big assumption that all children know traditional stories...however it depends upon the lesson outcome. I wouldn't expect my year 1s to be able to concentrate on coming up with a story but also on punctation spelling.

Also to write a story you have to know story lanaguge...one way is traditional stories where they know the plot

Children learn best by practise practise practise...just because they have done adding in receptoion doesn't mean I don't need to do it again

so I would Jack in the beanstalk and I have used other stories ...so AitchTwoOh I don't egt your point

cazzybabs · 17/05/2009 19:17

AND why is poor old Jack a crap story.... it is fairly boy friendly for a traditional story...no mention of princess.

Boys love the giant aspect and the chopping down the beanstalk

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 19:18

which one?

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 19:19

er, stealing cos you're poor?

cazzybabs · 17/05/2009 19:20

moral debate in class....

acutally I don't think any of my year 1s would get that link they just like the gore (in the murder of the giant)

Rothwellmummy · 17/05/2009 19:20

popsycal, would like more info on my sparklebox has been banned please. Should i not be using it? Would love to email you for more info if pos,
