My 11 year old DS is doing SATS next wk too.Ive been playing itdown as he gets so stressed. He has been practising at school and getting level 4 or 5 in everything.Ive promised him a treat after all finished, but not to worry and do his best.its horrible how much pressure they are put under poor things.Oh well, be over soon eh!

swedishmum · 05/05/2005 17:47

Nutcracker, don't mean to be rude but the teacher sounds barking mad! For the last few years I've done amanuensis and must admit I'm much less stressed to be out of it myself! I guess I would have been excused this year anyway as dd would have been taking her ks2 tests.

Goldfish · 05/05/2005 18:13

My ds is doing his ks2 sats next week. He has been told to expect to get level 5s but is now worrying in case he doesn't.
I have told him not to worry and that I will be pleased whatever he gets as he does try really hard. If he does get 5s obviously I will be pleased he is doing well, but the school has pushed and pushed the bright ones for the good of their league tables with booster classes and so on to ensure they get a 5, while the ones who have been struggling a little tend to get overlooked.

Milliways · 06/05/2005 15:49

Woo Hoo - YR9 SATS have finished today.

No more for this household until next year

Good luck to all those about to take theirs.

saffy202 · 07/05/2005 09:10

KS2 Sats next week in this house. The last few weeks ds1 has been worrying like mad that he won't do as well as the school expects - 5s also.

I've said as long as he does his best it doesn't matter.

However he's woke up this morning with a completely different attitude - he's now looking forward to them - and afterwards the school is lining up a few trips and treats for them. They've already been to the cinema for all the hard work they've been doing - never did that in my day

I can't beleive this pressure on such a young children, I/m just thankful we won't have to worry about SATS though I suppose there will be the 11 plus.

Potty, my brother is about to move fairly close to where I think you are and he has been inquiring into schools, just wondered which one was putting the pressure on.

good luck to all year 6 tomorrow

i am thankful to be on maternity leave this year

jampots · 08/05/2005 09:08

Good luck to all SATS takers - I was there last year!

I agree the pressure on the children is immense. This year the year 6 teacher has had a lot of the kids panicking about not achieiving level 5s (not 6 this year ). My friends dd is crying herself to sleep every night

roisin · 08/05/2005 15:41

OK - someone posted this link on another thread today. I read it and was completely gobsmacked. Do the children do "test A" and "test B"?

That's a total of 5.5 hours of tests for 10&11 yr olds over the course of a week?

Surely I must be misunderstanding this?

Can anyone tell me how many hours of tests my ds1 (in yr3) will be doing next week?

Potty1 · 08/05/2005 15:58

Yes roisin they do all the tests on that timetable.

Not sure how long the KS1 tests last.

popsycal · 08/05/2005 15:59

yes they do

roisin · 08/05/2005 16:45

I am really really shocked

I've always railed against SATs, and thought they were dreadful. But in my innocence I was protesting about may be 3 x 30 min tests! I had absolutely no idea the length of the tests involved.

just read through this thread, and quite appalled at how awful some schools are in their approach to sats, my son is now yr 5, but i know when he did his ks1 sats in y2, they made no big deal about it, and he sailed through with his L3's, but for a school to promise trips if they do well, and even the school that give them an after school coaching sats club is unbelievable -surely if they are taught well, they wouldn't need this extra tuition at all???

swedishmum · 08/05/2005 22:35

To be honest, having sat with children through KS2 SATS I can tell you it seems like far more than 5.5 hours... and if I feel like that how on earth do the children feel?

swedishmum · 08/05/2005 22:37

Actually, as dd has been excused by her future grammar school, am feeling guilty. Best wishes to all those enduring SATS this week.

dottee · 09/05/2005 12:22

Thanks to all good luck wishes!

Ds didn't eat much of his breakfast this morning. He's trying to play it down but I'm concerned he's nervous.

Two lots of 45 mins science tests today at KS2.

What's peeing ds off is that he'll not get to find out how he's done!

I have 2 doing sats this week ds1 is doing his key stage 2 sats and dd1 is doing her key stage 1 sats amazingly ds1 is completly relaxed about the whole thing.DD1 was crying this morning why on earth they had to tell her yesterday what was happening today god only knows her little face dropped when she walked in the classroom and saw all the tables had been separated .I can understand why they need to understand the importance of the tests in y6 but at 7 years old it really isn't necesary.

RTKangaMummy · 10/05/2005 10:48

DS started his yesterday

He is in class 5

They do them in every year in Juniors at his school.

I know they are not the "real" ones but were still done on separate tables IYSWIM

piffle · 10/05/2005 11:07

ds said his science ones were easy...
He has a couple of long and short writing ones today so we'll see this afternoon.
Also it is normal or usual for teachers to look over the answers (while child is doing the test she wanders around checking for cheating and stuff) and recommend a child "checks" their answers again, ds said his teacher said this to a few kids?

Carla · 10/05/2005 11:15

I'm sure it's been posted on MN before, but are there any teachers out there who can let me know what the levels mean? From what dd1's teacher has said to me, it seems like it goes from 1-3, with a, b, and c as a sort of 'how well you do in that number' thing. I may have misinterpreted it, but if your child has a '1', are they totally gifted, or do they need a bit more help.

DDs teacher has been feeding their class mock SATS since Easter. She's refused to tell either us, or them, when she's going to give them the actual task - on the grounds that we won't worry about it, nor will we worry our children about it.

Was amazed to discover it's not like my 0 levels - whereby I had to spend the night at a teacher's house 'cos I had one exam at the same time as another I should have been taking - she had HARD TOILET PAPER. It seems they're given sometime in late May/early June.

Any thoughts?
