I just think the 'send 'em in as Spiderman' attitude hilariously misses the point...

Book week is all about trying to encourage children to read good quality children's literature.

Yes - my son has Star Wars books just like every other 7 year old, and they really are the most badly written drivel ever, but he also reads lots of well-written stuff by good children's authors. Even at this age he spots the difference.

There are loads of good ideas on Mumsnet this year for really simple costumes. Resorting to the polyester superhero playsuit really is a bit if cop-out, don't you think?

Alice in wonderland.

DS2 went as Thomas the Tank Engine. I bought the costume from Sainsbury but he had the idea before we saw the outfit and I couldn't think how to make a comfortable train outfit (someone on here put me on to the Sainbury one). DS1 went as Percy the Park Keeper - jeans, wellies, jacket and flat cap and carrying a trug of garden tools and some stuffed animals as Percy's Friends.

dd1 is going as Peter Pan

Floppsy Bunny - all homemade, v smug and my dd loved the fact that no one could guess who she was in assembly. Not I might add as my costume was c* but just that they hadn't heard of flopsy!

ds1 was Tom from BeastQuest - his idea. He said he needed a belt and some raggdy clothes - so that was easy. Then we cut some jewels from shiny card and stuck them on his belt. job done. I am sure no one had any idea who he was though.

DC's (indep) school celebrated World Book Day this week but DC was not given a £1 book token. Instead we were asked to give £1 to the school for their book fund. Is this usual?

Dd went as The Illustrated mom, covered in tattoos, and funnily enough a princess won dress up prize in her class too .

DS1 went as dracula, I did white face, shaded his eyes and did black eyebrows, sprayed his hair black and painted on point. Plus dribbled fake blood down his mouth and on his white shirt. He had a cape too. Everyone said he looked great. DS2 went as frankenstein, I put big square sponges in an old black jacket of mine for big shoulders and he wore a mask as he wouldn't have face painted. Dss teachers all dressed up too, saw a Denis the menace teacher so they weren't bothered where the character came from.
