...according to the SCC website. So you can start planning your lie-in now...

Yep we were texted by the school at about 3.30! Lovely

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:01

It is good to know in advance, but in this part of Surrey, it is a bit of overkill to cancel all schools. I know it is different in the North Downs.

My boys are at an independent school in Surrey and they are going along with the County decision. I suppose it takes any confusion out of it.

I am still waiting to hear if I get to go to school tomorrow.

We have had a very fun snowday today

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:05

We're in NE Surrey and it is pretty deep snow around here. I think most of the kids could get there (as it's a small infants school and most are within walking distance), but the teachers come from further away and might struggle.

Anyway, it's probably a once-in-a-school-career incident round these parts so I'm not going to fret about lost curriculum time - just trying to work out where the nearest sledging hill might be

Where are you finding the info policywonk? It still only talks about today when I look at it.

CrackerNut · 02/02/2009 17:12

How do they decide on a blanket closure does anyone know ??

We are in Brum and there is currently a HUGE list of schools closed but still no blanket closure.
Dd2's school is shut but the secondary next door is still saying open which is a bit daft.

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:12

on this page

For a while it was under 'News' but not under 'School Closures' but now they seem to have updated everything.

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:14

It's on the BBC News too.

CarGirl · 02/02/2009 17:14

Hurrah, hmmmm dd4 has a speech therapy assessment tomorrow not sure we'll actually get there!

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:15

Sorry cracker, don't know the answer to that. The Surrey advice is just that - advice - the school can override if they wish (but I don't think any are).

Perhaps they just think that since most of the county is badly affected, it is an easier and simpler measure to close all the schools. It also avoids problems like teachers having to work while their own kids aren't at other schools that have closed.

I think this is a huge overreaction to a perfectly legitimate coping strategy for the level of snow we have had.

I know that from Croydon in the East to Godalming in the West, people are virtually housebound except on foot. What is the point trying to struggle on, opening schools etc?

I understand that essential services need to keep going, and if I worked for one I would be thinking of all kinds of contingency plans to get there. Probably walking for miles, followed by sleeping on the floor etc.

But is school 'essential'?

Smithagain · 02/02/2009 17:17

Thanks policywonk - was looking under "school closures" Silly me

cece · 02/02/2009 17:17

how is it your end cargirl? We are snowed into our road atm. Although looks like some cars are going up and down WH Lane!

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:21

It will be a disaster if they over-ride. Well, not a dangerous one, but if there is doubt, they will have only a trickle of children coming in. This means they won't actually be able to run proper classes and so will have to repeat the classes when all the children are in.

If I don't work tomorrow, I will miss my Y11s which means that my buffer before they do their GCSEs will be drastically reduced. I'm not averse to dragging them in during the Easter holidays, but we are not so close to the wire yet.

CarGirl · 02/02/2009 17:21

Crockford Park Road is fine so I assume NH Road is too however I can't see me being able to get my car out of the residents car park at the back of me snow is over a foot deep. One car tried for an hour today and then gave up! It tends to freeze easily so tomorrow I predict a skating rink.

Apparantly A post office the only one open for miles! Good old Tesco wouldn't want to miss a money making opportunity.

SALT appointments were cancelled today (just rang) so will have to check tomorrow waited so long for this appt.

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:22

BTW, I'm in NW Surrey - roads are clear, pavements slushy. The temp is now above freezing.

CarGirl · 02/02/2009 17:23

Around here though we only need one incident on the A3 or M25 and everything road wise grinds to a halt in good weather, some of the cut through roads between the A3 & M25 are compacted snow - tomorrow it will probably be solid ice.

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:23

Our local Post Office is now in the back of WH Smith and they didn't open today. I was .

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:24

Hope you get to your appointment CarGirl

Cloud - I think the decision is perfectly legitimate too.

One of my neighbours emigrated from USA last year and he got his snow blower out this morning! LOL He looked so delighted to be using it. Bless him he cleared a path on each side of the road along the pavement

cece · 02/02/2009 17:25

I am not attempting to go anywhere tomorrow. Good luck with the appointment cargirl!

CarGirl · 02/02/2009 17:26

Cece can you send him down here please?

I hope it all melts overnight otherwise it will be worse tomorrow.

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:26

I got to use my US-purchased snow-shovel today. I actually enjoy shovelling snow

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:28

That's what we're supposed to be doing, isn't it? Getting out there with shovels and clearing paths for our elderly neighbours (I do have a 90-year-old man two doors away).

God, I'm rubbish. Will try to have a go tomorrow.

OP posts:
CarGirl · 02/02/2009 17:30

ST can drop it in on your way to the post office, I'll even help clear you a parking spot.

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:31

My boys are off-school tomorrow, otherwise they could drop it into you on their way there.
