...according to the SCC website. So you can start planning your lie-in now...

Has anyone seen a gritter or snow plugh in Surrey BTW?

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:34

I've seen gritters - and felt the sting of them as they hurtle by. I have not seen a plough.

Our pavements are really bad, and will be awful if they freeze over tonight. Having cleared the area in front of my own house, I know it is the type of snow that is easy to move. It wouldn't take much to a have a little man with a snow blower to walk along.

CarGirl · 02/02/2009 17:35

we've not had them grit around here at all if they had the roads would be clear by now.

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:36

DP says the roads between Walton and Chertsey are pretty well gritted now.

Haven't seen any gritters here (Leatherhead). We've got a very cool igloo in the garden though. DDs are currently sitting in it, with a couple of candles, looking so mellow!

scienceteacher · 02/02/2009 17:37

Maybe Runnymede has only one gritter - it wouldn't surprise me.

They may have obligations on the M25 (no idea if this is the case).

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:38

How did you make an igloo? Sounds like a project for tomorrow.

According to DH, who grew up in the US Snow Belt, you make a mound of snow, then tunnel into it.

You don't cut out slabs, eskimo style.

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:41

Righto

If I'm not posting tomorrow night, could you call the emergency services?

DD2s school was apparently the only Surrey school to open today, and is likely to open tomorrow as well. She's not happy, particularly since at least half her class weren't there, some of whom live on the same road as us (we're NE Surrey too Policywonk)

cece · 02/02/2009 17:44

No snow ploughs or gritters seen here but we live in a cul de sac so unlikely they would come here!

The snow blower must be from the US, fancy bringing it with you! - he obviously loves it

Smithagain · 02/02/2009 17:44

OK - Igloo construction.

(DH is an engineer, which helps! He was also suffering from frustrated childhood ambition - his brother once made one while he was away on a school trip and he's been harbouring jealous thoughts ever since).

He made blocks using two plastic toy boxes - rectangular with slightly tapered sides. He put snow in one, packed it down with the other, to make blocks. Arranged blocks in a circle, with loose snow for "mortar". Built it up one circle at a time. He's made an entrance tunnel and everything - the girls are in heaven!

Will put pic on profile if I can work out how.

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:45

That sounds very annoying! Bet the Head won't be super-popular for the forseeable future.

My ds's school was open today in Kingston, Surrey but will def be closed 'to children' tomorrow.

But as I work there , I am debating whether that covers me too!

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:46

Sorry, that was to Violet

Am impatiently awaiting Smith's picture (and possibly her DH to come round and do one for us)

You're all making me nervous now with talk of your schools being open. I want to turn my alarm off with confidence tonight!

Smithagain · 02/02/2009 17:54

Igloo pics on profile. DH tells me that a large kitchen knife was also involved - to make the blocks more tapered.

(Health warning - DH is structural engineer and quite good at making arched structures without burying small children under three feet of snow ............ I hope!)

policywonk · 02/02/2009 17:56

Fark me, that is brilliant. (Your kids are pretty cute too )

Hmm, suffocation risk weighed up against undying respect of small children...

Smithagain's H here:

Basically it's as described (pack snow into rectangular tubs to make blocks - build a circle, build another circle on top, keep going) but a couple of hints:

Don't worry about gaps, get blocks in place then pack snow into the gaps.

Don't build a door, build it solid to above the level of a door then cut out arch opening with big kitchen knife.

When you get near the top you need to carve blocks more tapered with the big knife.

To make entrance tunnel, persuade small child to crouch on hands and knees to support walls us they build up until you get block in the top to complete.

madwomanintheattic · 02/02/2009 18:00

for those of you on the surrey / hants border, eagle fm is attempting to keep up with which local surrey schools have confirmed they are closing, in line with the county council advice... (go figure)

my 2 hants kids are off tomorrow, so i'm only waiting out on the surrey confirmation lol...

kaz33 · 02/02/2009 18:00

Next to DS's schools, round the corner, 12 inches of snow and no sign of a gritter. It is total carnage up here if it is icy as both schools are on steep hills.

Ive had a great day, up on the downs with the kids this morning and then walk to Sainsburys for milk. This afternoon I put a first coat of paint in the hall.

My work was closed today, if it is open I might think about walking in. If not I am going to finish the hall and start on the glossing.

Looking at the weather round here, not expecting to be back at school till Thursday.

policywonk · 02/02/2009 18:01

'persuade small child to crouch on hands and knees to support walls us they build up'

Thank you Mr Again. I've shown the pics to my DP and he's looking a bit competitive (which was the effect I was hoping for) so I will pass on your instructions.

Kaz the temperature forecast is warming up tonight, tom & Wed so I reckon it may all melt okay. I reckon our gritter quota was used up on the M25 & A3 oh and various other dual carriageways.

happilyconfused · 02/02/2009 18:08

I have checked the websites for myself and the 2 DCs, and it looks at though we are all off again tomorrow. Surprised at a Kingston school being open - mine was closed I even managed to sneek in some marking today.

kaz33 · 02/02/2009 18:09

How sad
