DD wants to stay on in the UK - what school?

I´m new to this forum - from the good old Continent, Germany based.

DD (16) is enjoying her year abraod at an independent school in Nrth Yorkshire and wants to stay on and do A-levels in your lovely country. However, she is broadly gifted, not yet settled on any specific career, and the limited No. of A-level subjects can be a hindrance for later studies at German universities.

At home she would probably do an International Baccalaureate, and we are now prospecting along this line in the UK.

I would be grateful for comments on schools offering IB and the perceived level of work/stress/results if your DD/S has chosen this track.

TIA!

I'd have a look here for UK schools doing the IB.

There are quite a few schools in the UK that are now offering both A levels and IB so definitely worth looking around. Only thing is, wouldn't she prefer staying where she is if she is settled and has made friends?

Hi continental and welcome

Yes, I wonder if your dd can't stay at her current school if you and she are happy with it and do the IB externally. I think it is possible but I don't the exact set-up. Could the British Council in Germany advise your about examination centres for the IB and possibly schools generally which offer it?

Thanks a lot for your postings - in the meantime I´ve located the hundredsmth schools and colleges offering the IB in the UK "here" and am trying to sort out what DD wants and what we can pay for. And who will admit her, of course.
Her present school is OK, but an external IB impossible up there.
St Clare´s Oxford looks very interesting - anybody?
Thanks again.

Worth School in Sussex offers a very successful IB course, and there are lots of German students in the 6th form. Not cheap though!

Malvern College does IB. Lovely school with some German students. Again, not cheap!

Worth is good but VERY religious (catholic) and like you say purple, VERY expensive, think just under £8k per term at the moment. Also, mainly boys at that school as they've only just started letting girls go there

Hi continental, I'm not sure how flexible you are regarding ,location, boarding, etc, but I would recommend this school in Bristol. They're only just starting the IB programme though, but it is a wonderful school with a great atmosphere.

Ardingly College is wonderful

If you are interested in IB you should consider Sevenoaks in Kent which was one of the first to take up IB(also close to eurostar line which may help with travel to/from continental europe).

beautifulgirls · 16/01/2009 22:14

I was about to suggest Sevenoaks school too but see I have been beaten to it.

yogabird · 16/01/2009 22:28

Sevenoaks used to have quite a few German students - we got dragged there for German A-level to see various plays put on by the sixth form.
