story here

Deliberate, do you think?...

So if only "18 professions" can now afford them, and they don't include teachers, architects or police officers, what are they? Any offers?

I'll start then:

Celeb.
Footballer/WAG.
Accountant.
Lawyer.
Chief executive of council (rather than using the schools in his own local authority - ooh, bit of politics, layzangemmun?).

MP

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 10:57

Yes, while championing the "excellence" of the schools in their constituency (some strange new use of the word "excellence" with which I was not previously familiar).

Consultant Doctors
Army officers (as they're helped)

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 11:09

Are they really? That's interesting.
Are any other professions helped?

teachers who work in these schools
my friend is a teacher in a private school and gets a 50% discount

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 11:12

oh yes, I think I did know that. It's not always as much as 50% though is it?

Pop stars

MP's

Hospital Consultants

Global brand owners

Brewery Heiress's

Fund Managers

Merchant Bankers

Barristers

Journalists

Newsreaders

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 11:13

'Journalists' is a pretty big group, though. I mean, there's Rosie (spit) Millard and there's the bloke who does the round-up on the Bogshire Gazette.

i have no idea
i only know what my friend gets

Cammelia · 12/07/2008 11:15

Sorry UQD I of course meant Famous Journalists

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 11:16

Can all MPs afford it? What's an MP's salary - about £60K? I suppose it depends on other outgoings.

OP posts:
nailpolish · 12/07/2008 11:18

mps dont really live on their salary though do they
they get most of their income from other things

SueW · 12/07/2008 11:18

Some teachers get 90% discount e.g. Repton

Teachers in GDST schools don't get any discount. Or not at our local one anyway.

noddyholder · 12/07/2008 11:20

Lots of local builders here have been sending theri kids to private not sure how long that will last!

ruty · 12/07/2008 11:21

Arms dealers
Drug smugglers
Drug manufacturers
Oil Tycoons
Russian Mafia
Saudi Royal Family
Traffic Wardens [sorry prob not just got carried away there]

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 11:24

And bursaries are only for the really low income, to judge by our local independent schools (less than 13k). Those in the middle get squeezed - too "rich" for a bursary, too poor to pay the fees themselves.

OP posts:
nailpolish · 12/07/2008 11:29

lots of ordinary people send their children to private schools

they just worked their arses off and do without cars holidays nicely decorated houses etc

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 11:31

I'm sure that's true. It's still out of reach for a lot of "professional" incomes though. It's not just the fees but all the expected "extras" like music lessons and uniform and trips.

ermmmmm, lottery jackpot winners??

nailpolish · 12/07/2008 11:33

i know a couple who own a sandwich shop who send their 2 girls to a private school

and folks get help from grandparents etc. inheritences.

why are you so bitter UQD?

cornsilk · 12/07/2008 11:33

UQD - very true - I've been looking for ds1 and it's £5.50 a day for dinners, which are compulsory, which adds on another £100 a month.

UnquietDad · 12/07/2008 11:34

Who says I am bitter?
It seems to be Wilfully Misinterpret Me Morning on here...

SilentTerror · 12/07/2008 11:35

GP's.
DHis a GP and is opposed to private education due to inverted snobbery ,but most of our GPfriends send their children to private schools, indeed his partner in the practice does.
Some do extra sessions to afford it.
Ithink it depends on how many children you have,ie alot of people could afford to send one child, wheras not many, even in thehigher paid professions, could send 4.

fivecandles · 12/07/2008 11:35

Dp and I are teachers (in state sector) and have 2 dcs in independent school.
