Waiting to buy sixth form uniform until GCSE results day?

DD has applied to a competitive school for 6th form where entry is based on getting sufficiently good GCSE results. I am 99.99% sure she will get in. But I'm still holding off buying the uniform for fear of jinxing it. It seems nothing is available secondhand. I'm I right to hold off given there will only be 2-3 weeks between results day and start of term? Anyone else in a similar boat?

Find out the returns policy and buy so that you have time to return?

Honeyhonay · 29/06/2026 08:09

Seems fine, surely 2-3 weeks will be plenty of time to buy the uniform.

Buscobel · 29/06/2026 09:41

If you’re buying new, surely there will be enough time.

I have not heard of a sixth form with uniform - is this private?

Where we are, the majority of the schools with sixth forms (all state) have a 'proper' uniform, a couple of them different from the one worn up to the end of year 11, slightly confusingly. The one and only indie doesn't have a sixth form.

Does it impact the answer whether it's state or independent? It's state. It's a mix around us whether you have uniform or not in the sixth form.

State sixth form and I waited until results day to buy. Blazer was very expensive! You still have a couple of weeks post results to get it and I expect many do wait. We went the day after results day and the shop had lots in stock.

My kids sixth form has uniform, although not logoed, just specific colour blazer, trousers and shirt, more like smart business clothing.

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/06/2026 09:44

Of course you wait. Is 2-3 weeks not enough time to buy uniform??

MrPickles73 · 30/06/2026 09:50

@PrincessOfPreschool I'm just concerned they will run out. They only take a few at sixth form including girls in a boys school so I don't think there is an unending supply. When you apply to the school for 6th form they ask you what your size is!

I would buy it now in case tbey run out……obviously keep the tags on. I can’t think of anything more embarrassing and uncomfortable than starting in the 6th form without the correct uniform.

Flamingcoming · 30/06/2026 10:10

I would buy it and keep receipts so you can return

No need to be paranoid, only asking out of interest as it isn’t something I had come across from my time or my DC’s.

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/06/2026 20:48

I would phone the uniform shop and ask how long an order takes if they've run out. It's probably not long at all.

Some places are very strict on return within 28 days.

Smilingzebra · 30/06/2026 20:58

My son is state sixth form and has a uniform (just a different tie to the lower school) - I didn't realise it was uncommon!

OP I'd be the same, worrying about tempting fate but also about leaving it too late - if I was you I'd just phone the uniform shop and ask what they suggest - I'm sure they'll have people asking the same question every year and fingers crossed they'll have a good solution one way or another.
