Hi all,

Me and my partner are moving from Bristol to South Manchester/ Stockport (thinking about Levenshulme/ Heatons) next year and we’re wondering if anyone could recommend any good schools for our son? He’s 3 currently but thinking about catchments etc pre emptively! Any advice/ recommendations would be hugely appreciated! We’d be open to independent, but would ideally like a really good state primary.

Loads around Trafford and just ask the local FB groups and ask

Heatons is massively more affluent than Levenshulme - levy also is Manchester as far as I know and they are worlds apart! Primary schools are all very good around all of the Heatons. High schools are ropey all across south and north Manchester. For the best high schools you’d need Trafford/altrincham (pricey) or else look for private schools.

Chorlton have some nice primaries.

People tend to move out towards Trafford due to the grammars.

TBH you should go and visit a few.

Trafford is where you’d normally head thinking forward to secondary but it’s not a system to be entered lightly - it’s brutal - so I’d say do some research into secondary first and once you’ve decided what appeals there, move into a primary school in catchment for your favourite secondaries.

I know Trafford and there are many Grammar schools the other secondary schools are excellent too

Heatons are nice enough, but it would be Stockport Grammar (private) or Priesthall High (comp). Levenshulme, not a chance! I had a very liberal friend who left there after primary as she didn’t feel it safe for teenage girls, regularly talked about needles at bus stops etc.

Trafford is an excellent area, and not just Altrincham. You need to research carefully but pretty much all state primaries are very good, and there are grammars/also some good non selective options.
