Is it worth trying for Tiffin School?

My DC is at an Independant primary school in SW London. we just received his CAT4 scores for this term. They are as follows
VR - 112
NVR - 124

I don’t understand this but his last set of CAT4 tests results last academic year was
VR -113
NVR -138

We don’t have any recent scores but his previous scores for attainment were
English - 123
Maths - 108

My question is should we even bother applying for Tiffin School? What are your thoughts on his scores?

I’m quite pissed with the NVR scores in all honesty! Especially for the money we are paying school for this school.

My son has 100% attendance, reads minimum 20 mins a day and has done since he was 6. Always finishes his homework in advance. What are we doing wrong? I’m always encouraging him and he enjoys school. What more can we do?

Most of these comments don’t help me or answer my question. It’s the usual here on mumsnet- no matter the query you get a collective group of people that will send negative vibes and attitude.
I’ve seen it many times here. Good job it didn’t bother me.

What a weird comment. Plenty of posters gave advice such as NVR not being a focus for Tiffin or asking his current school what typical scores kids were getting at this stage if they subsequently got into Tiffin.

As many people have said, for Tiffin it’s English and Maths, English and Maths. Completely different set of skills from VR and NVR. The maths stage 1 is super time pressured in particular. Would suggest you do one or two of the eleven plus mocks for a better idea of where he is in cohort - there are some that run at Tiffin itself (not sure if they’ve happened already)

and yes, my DS did get a place but he’s going elsewhere - state primary plus weekly tutoring from yr 5.

@Nushi21 Private school is no guarantee of high scores and kids that are tutored to high heaven often struggle at super selective schools. You just have to accept your dc for what he is. We are a very highly educated family too but our youngest DS has SEN and all we want is for him to pass some Gcse’s to give him choices in life. It’s the hand you are dealt with.

Well actually the reason for the Independant primary school was for the scores, so yes we are paying for the scores. Isn’t everyone paying for scores that pays sky high prices for primary school? It’s surely not for a decorated classroom.

You can’t pay for intelligence.

I don't understand why people come at you about the scores. He shows a drop I think and a significant one where they should be adding value. I would be annoyed and this sounds like the same as what happened to my boys. I bet its the same school.

Hi @Nushi21 Tiffin first round has gone. Could you update us on your decision please? More your decision making process in relation to CAT scores? Thanks!
Although you're probably in the thick of exams and couldn't give a rat's *ss about updating us. Which would be entirely fair enough! But I thought I'd ask as these scores and the value placed on them did my head in last year.
(For reference, DS was given a CAT4 of 123 in Sept of y6. He was in a prep school but no tutoring or coaching and passed the first round at Tiffin but was not close to getting a place when the second round results came out. I know one boy from his school had a similar CAT4 and got a place from the waiting list. A much more studious boy than DS I must add.)

Hi I think your question wasnt clear which is why you received the kind of replies that you did. Correct me if Im wrong but you were blaming the private school for not being able to teach your son well enough to score better marks right? I dont think you were blaming your son for not being able to score.

On another note, my DS sat for Tiffin Boys this year - both rounds. So we are just waiting on the results (03rd March) and he is currently at a very sought after private school too and has been since reception. I wouldnt say he is top of the class but he is amonst the first 7 for sure and there are 18 kids in his class. We sent him for tuitions from Year 5 December and stopped in August this year. And from August he has only solved question papers on Atom.

I hope your DS got through a good school and is happy and settled by now.

Hi flower bomb. I was angry at the school because my dc’s results were all over the place. We booked him with a tutor company and his scores were very high. Even they were confused with the scores he had at school and with them.
Anyway moving on, he did the tiffin exam but failed to get to the second round.
He felt very pressurised on the exam day and came out extremely upset and in tears. Even though he has competed the entire paper.

I guess it wasn’t meant yo be so we accepted that he wouldn’t not get invited for the second round.

His CAT4 test results turned out unbelievably amazing. His scores for each battery were between 15 and 20+ more than his previous CAT4 results.

The school told is not to apply to certain schools for 11+. Now we know that he would have passed with flying colours.

At the end of the day he didn’t pass Tiffin which was his no.1 choice after viewing the school.

He has received offers from some extremely good independent schools.

Tiffin wasn’t meant to be and he’s accepted that and moved on.
