Are you based in Epsom and your daughter goes to Tiffin Girl School?

My daughter passed the first stage exam for Tiffin Girls School. In case she is successful with the second stage, I started to think about transport option to/from the school.

We live in Epsom, and it takes 1.5 hours or more to get to the school on public busses, which is a lot for an 11 year old. Therefore, I am investigating if there are any other options such as private mini buses.

Are any of parents on Munsnet based in Epsom and have a daughter who goes to Tiffin Girls? If so, can you let me know how, if other than public transport, they get to/from school every day?

Thank you!

Is Epsom in the 'designated area'?

LondonPapa · 16/10/2024 15:03

Can you not drive in and drop your daughter off? I can’t even begin to imagine the costs associated with other options.

KT17 is, which i think covers Epsom. The designated area is actually really massive.

Just wondered! I only really have knowledge of the Tiffin Boys whose inner area isn't huge.

Wowzel · 16/10/2024 17:09

I used to have over an hours commute to and from my selective secondary school. 1.5 hrs is too far, a 3 hr commute each day will really wear her down. Friends will find it hard to visit and homework will be a challenge timewise.

It's not in the inner area. The inner area is really only around the school. But the designated area goes out to including Epsom, up to Balham, etc. There's 60 places reserved for inner area and the rest from anywhere in the designated. (I weirdly looked at this just the other day and have seen two threads about it in the last two days!)

BendingSpoons · 16/10/2024 22:30

Did you apply to Nonsuch? That would be an easier commute.

titchy · 16/10/2024 22:38

Train would be quicker surely?

RoseMarigoldViolet · 16/10/2024 23:09

She could catch the train.

KeyKnowledge · 16/10/2024 23:12

It's less than 20 minutes by train.

MarchingFrogs · 17/10/2024 07:50

Looks more like 33 minutes fastest actual train journey Epsom - Kingston with one change (then the walk or ?65 bus). ? Still not an hour and a half, though, unless she'd have to walk for more than half an hour to get to Epsom station.

It still boggles e that parents make their DC sit entrance exams with no prior investigation as to how the child might actually get to the school, though. It's not like the school has unexpectedly moved in the last few months.

The inner area for the girls school isn’t huge but the designated area is massive. It nearly stretches down to the M25.

Long journeys to/from school is what we prefer to avoid. She could be spending that time for afterschool activities and hobbies!

Then the train looks like your best bet - with the flexibility to just catch a later one if your DD does stay for an after school club, or just hang out with school friends at the end of the day.

CecilyP · 18/10/2024 01:01

Train from Epsom to Kingston, change at Raynes Park, just under 40 minutes. 406 bus about the same time.

HSkomi · 31/10/2024 03:03

i am thinking to give my DD a lift every day to Tiffin from Epsom. However, we are still debating which one to put on CAF as first preference HBS vs Tiffin 😂. Last day to think again .
