Hooray!
They were always a nonsense and I am glad the new government has taken swift action.

All we need now is proper support for struggling schools ... I will keep hoping ...

Can we get past this idea that MATs=evil empires and LA= paragons of educational virtue? Our local LA is horrific and as politically motivated as the worst of any academy trusts.

No, the point here is, who is holding the MATS up to scrutiny? At the moment the stance seems to be LA=bad, MAT = good. When some LAs are good, and some MATS aren't. But we mustn't admit that a policy driven by political dogma can be bad.

Its very unlikely that a bad Ofsted report was the only reason this lady did what she did

Do you think the verdict of the coroner was incorrect?

Although we do need to be clear that academy trusts are unelected and accountable to no-one. And it shows.

I haven't read the coroners report but will do so now.
Did the Coroner say that the ONLY reason the lady took her own life was this ofsted report?
Unikely but I will read it and check

@BirdFeederFun Do you have to be so patronising?! There’s clear info that a quick monitoring visit is possible and acadamisation can be challenged. So maybe read a bit more widely.

Except there wasn’t this option when Ruth Perry took her life and it was Ruth Perry we were discussing as you were obviously aware of when mentioning house prices.

Additionally, that option was added because of the impact it had on Ruth Perry.

Thanks @noblegiraffe for your patience with people spouting nonsense on this thread.

Cool. Let us know what you found out.

I think the problem with the coroners report is that some vital people were not called for evidence. I think the Ofsted inspectors should have been called for balance. Whatever the ins and outs, one word judgements don’t mean much unless schools want to trumpet them. And they do. Cannot have it both ways. Safeguarding is important and schools should abide by the requirements which the vast majority do.

noblegiraffe · 12/09/2024 08:19

Whatever the ins and outs, one word judgements don’t mean much unless schools want to trumpet them.

In the case of ‘Inadequate’ this is utter bollocks. And it was even more so when Ruth Perry took her life.

Have you read the coroner’s prevention of future deaths report? Have you actually paid attention to how Ofsted have behaved since Ruth Perry’s death? Have you looked at the suicide figures? Because if you had, you couldn’t possibly think that repeating such twaddle as ‘they didn’t ask Ofsted inspectors for balance’ was deserving of anything other than utter derision. Their behaviour was despicable, and their procedures were inhumane.

So the report was quite rightly damning of Ofsted but ultimately said that the report "contributed" to her suicide.
As I said, not the sole reason BUT either way the poor lady is dead and my heart goes out to her family.
Whether these changes will make any difference to the stress teachers suffer from is another matter, it might just be a sticking plaster and/or an attempt by the Govt to be seen to be taking action.

noblegiraffe · 12/09/2024 15:18

Yes, because that was the question under discussion. Did Ofsted contribute towards her death? Yes.

The question 'was Ofsted the sole contributor to her death'? wasn't being investigated.

As I said, not the sole reason

You seem very confident in this for someone who has not provided any other reason.

The report is clear. Ruth Perry had no previous relevant mental health history. Her mental health deteriorated seriously during and post the inspection. She wrote notes that specifically linked her state of mind and consideration of killing herself with the outcome of the inspection.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-67612233

She wrote "I write this to you as parents on the evening of 18th November 2022 to say how utterly broken I am by the Ofsted inspection.
"I have given my life to CPS [Caversham Primary School]. I have only ever wanted children to leave happy and confident on the next stage of their journey, and I have been devastated by the impact of how I have done a disservice to the community."

"Ruth had googled what head teachers do after failed Ofsted inspections - she wrote that she had seen examples of suicide, forced removal, and "resignation in shame".
Her notes describe how close she had come to killing herself and how she had talked herself "in and out of doing it".

Will people stop nitpicking and trying to let bloody Ofsted off the hook over this. It's disgusting.

In the days following an inspection at her school, the head teacher wrote down her innermost thoughts.
