Request a state school place if you want it or not

This email is doing the rounds aimed at private school parents:

"The idea is to try to flood the Council with requests for urgent school places from September. If they get tens of thousands of emails like this we may see them under pressure."

Basically request a state school place if you want it or not.

I have heard this from other parents on a local FB chat. I was just really shocked! I think it's a parent driven "round Robin"

you have quoted from the email

So… you didn’t receive an email
and you haven’t even seen the email
you have just heard about an email

clarkkentsglasses · 10/06/2024 16:54

Well in the area I live there are many many private schools and if each of those parents do this, that really is tens of thousands!

This is going to put so much pressure on our local state schools.

It really isn't.

Do let’s play through what happens:

Parent apply. Council either says

  • Yes, there is an in year place, which you must take up within the next 2 weeks or lose OR
  • No, there is not a place at your preferred school. We have allocated you a place at nearest undersubscribed school. We have placed you on a waiting list, and this is is how to appeal, but in the meantime you need to take up the place offered or you lose it.

Can you explain to me how this very normal interaction, happening many times a day all over the country, creates panic?

Edited

You need to take into account that the people who wrote this fictional email have a complete lack of understanding of how the system works

This is what the email also says:

The only way a labour government will not follow through with this policy is if the NUT block it, and the only way they will do that is if they panic about how many children may switch to the state sector.

The NUT doesn’t even exist so this email is coming from a place of pure ignorance.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/06/2024 17:14

Grape vine again

clarkkentsglasses · 10/06/2024 17:14

I'm going to tell them the NUT doesn't exist!

🤣🤣🤣
I think you’ve made this whole thing up OP!

Thereisnoname · 10/06/2024 17:15

There might be the places in the state schools across the whole country but sure certain areas will be pushed for places if the estimated 10% of children do leave the private sector.

discountsandoffers · 10/06/2024 17:15

so… no screen shot op of this email you’ve “heard about” and yet quote from at length?

What a surprise

So do you thinks that's a good idea then ? What a selfish and stupid thing to do

It's a terrible idea and deep down morally wrong.

Scaremongering bollocks. There’s a woman in our village peddling the line that the local primary will be ‘swamped’. It really won’t. Most of the private school parents in the village can easily absorb the extra cost by downgrading the skiing holidays and shiny new cars. Including her. “I’m just worried for the local primary” she says. Are you chuff, love. 🙄

As a parent with a child about to start private school this is abhorrent. Vat goes to central government not the council who will have an administrative nightmare over this.

Also slight possibility it could disrupt another child schooling plans.

Labour are coming out with plans for the VAT revenue today - more nursery place and breakfast clubs so if they are budgeting for it people need to start tightening their belts and sucking it up ( me included).

As an aside I did notice that they plan to use the empty classrooms from falling birth rates for nurseries so I am not sure there will be as much space in schools for private school transfers as people claim but there is no stopping it.

They are making it up as they go along now. Their own list of pledges allocates the VAT to more teachers and mental health support. Breakfast funding is supposed to be coming from non doms. They seem to be allocating the same money twice. Their own senior figures don’t even understand their own policies.

sarahc336 · 10/06/2024 17:21

Honestly what has the world come to. Where is the sense of community and looking out for each other. What a load of $hit aren't people just awful 🙄

Scautish · 10/06/2024 17:22

FFS. If this is true then the people suggesting and doing this are twats of the highest order.

how dare we take away their privilege, eh?

private schools; helping some thick but rich kids succeed at the expense of poorer but smarter kids who - in a truly meritocratic society- would outperform them otherwise.

Onomatofear · 10/06/2024 17:23

The councils have no obligation to find school places for anyone for 2024 now that the deadlines have passed. Anyone applying would be making a late application. If the spaces don’t exist, they won’t be given one.

Frankly, it boils my blood how people who’ve never had to deal with any kind of financial adversity are now throwing all their toys out of the pram because they are greedy and want to keep all their wealth for themselves. It’s about time they had to contribute something instead of sitting back with an I’m alright Jack attitude.

helping some thick but rich kids succeed
@Scautish
How on earth has our supposedly civilised society descended into this name calling? All this policy does is incite hatred and spite. We are talking about children - innocent children. Both sides should be respectful of each other and be capable of a civilised debate.

Reugny · 10/06/2024 17:26

Looks like the Catholic primary schools I know that are under subscribed are going to get some pupils who live closer to their school and fill up their places.

Oh well least it will create another generation of non-religious people.
