Can anyone recommend individuals or companies that offer in-person GCSE tutoring in Edinburgh? Maths and the sciences primarily. Thanks for any help!

I'm going to start with the obvious question.
Why GCSE Tutor in Scotland when the Scottish system doesn't do GCSEs?

(Can't help as I am at the other end of the country.)

EdinburghMama · 21/02/2024 07:55

It might not be obvious but many private schools in Scotland offer iGCSEs over National 5s.

Ah, that makes sense.

If the OP wants tutoring for IGCSEs rather than GCSE then they should say to though.

I don't know about maths and science but for my subject, MFL, the specs are very different. Someone who is experienced in tutoring or teaching GCSE may not have the necessary knoledge of the IGCSE spec. And vice versa obvs.

At a private school but needing tutoring for GCSEs ??
Interesting

Ooh we struggled with this for maths. We went with KipMcGrath in the end. It’s very small classes, where they do their own work.
if you were aiming for the very top grades then perhaps the GCSE specificity would be needed but we’re not.

Can’t speak for the OP but my child got behind in Covid and was ill for much of last year. Also their maths teacher is the worst teacher they have.

Apologies @EdinburghMama I just realised the comment about IGCSEs came from you - I thought at first it was a speculative comment from another poster.

If you need face-to-face tutoring for IGCSEs in Scotland then I think that might not be easy. As per my post above (apologies for typos - was posting on phone) the IGCSE spec can be somewhat niche in terms of tutoring.

And I would imagine most tutors and teachers in Scotland are better versed in Scottish exams tbh.

You may have to consider online tutoring - there are certainly some advantages to it. No I am not touting for business haha as no one would want me as a science tutor! But if you widen your net in that way you may get a better result.

Thank you clary and RoganJosh for your advice. It is a niche situation, and while I think in-person would be ideal for my child, that might be a challenge given my location so I'll have a look into online support. Apologies for missing out the 'i' from the GCSE in my original post.
