Girl put in isolation for wearing Asda skirt

Remember the girl who got put in isolation for wearing Vivienne Westwood shoes and everyone said quite right, uniform is there to foster equality?

This girl got put in isolation for wearing a skirt from Asda rather than the (considerably more expensive) school supplier.

It looked so much like the “accepted” skirt that a teacher had to actually check the label on the skirt.

I don’t even know where to start with this.

Tearful schoolgirl, 12, put in isolation over Asda skirt as teacher 'checks label'

Student Lilly was found to have been wearing a pleated £7 number from the high street supermarket instead of the near identical mandatory £17.99 version - so she was sent to learn in isolation.

I've come to the conclusion that school uniform is a religion with many people in the UK. It's fully bananas.

YES THIS!!!

I think it’s all bloody ridiculous. If you go back to what is the purpose of school children should be getting an education and it really doesn’t matter one tiny iota if a child’s black skirt is slightly different from the prescribed one. I think there is something about letting go of the little things and being strict on the things that actually matter like empowering young people to make good choices, to find a love of learning and to develop a good work ethic, to try your best etc. how do teachers actually do their job if they’re always looking for uniform infringements?

I wouldn’t even know where to start if I had to take in a waistband on a skirt.

Yes, I was going to say this. I can see on buttons and name tapes but I have no idea how to take in a waistband.

Doesn’t altering the uniform skirt then make it non uniform?

The problem with having a single school supplier (apart from cost) is that thing where you order a load of new uniform and then get a message to say it is out of stock and will be sent in three weeks. This isn’t much good if the children are required to have have their jumper / blazer / logo coat with them at all times.

A friend had this when she ordered a load of uniform for her son who was starting year 7 (so he didn’t have any ill fitting uniform to make do with).

@Iwasafool even with glasses on? My eyesight is bad too, minus double digit numbers but I can still thread a needle.

Even with glasses on, it's hardly shocking I mean some people are actually blind.

I'd love to see @MNHQ do a campaign on this area.

School uniform should be affordable. No more branded skirts, trousers, PE kits etc. If schools what kids in team strips for events then they should provide them. Logoed items should be limited to 1 or 2 items only.

School uniform should be comfortable. Schools should not be able to dictate that a child cannot remove a blazer or jumper on a hot day whilst simultaneously teaching bodily autonomy in PHSE. The hypocrisy is astounding.
