Schoolblazer uniform costs

I can not believe how much schoolblazer keeps increasing the cost of our school’s uniform. I am in discussion with our school about it but I could do with some evidence of other school’s costs that are also obliged to use schoolblazer.

if you have to buy your child’s blazer from www.schoolblazer.com please could you tell me the current price? (You don’t need to name the school)

Ours is now £94 🙈

TIA x

Our games kit was indestructible and fine to pass on after being bought second hand and worn for 2 to 3 years though.

Up until recently none of the schools in my city had blazers but one or two have introduced them. As my youngest is in year 9 I’m feeling hopeful that if the craze for blazers spreads it won’t impact on us.

blazers are completely unnecessary and schools should reimagine uniform to be cost effective and more practical.

Our secondary switched from sweatshirts to blazers. The blazers were not that expensive (now 33.50), and would wash/drip-dry overnight. When it was sweatshirts, we had two, but one was fine with the blazers, and they probably fit for longer, too, so the overall cost is lower.

As for practicality, my daughter thought she was going to hate the blazers, but discovered how useful the pockets were.

EmeraldFox · 18/06/2023 16:44

@lanthanum I agree about the blazers. The cost was low for the time worn, £76 (current price) for two blazers (some boys might need three) over five years is only £15 a year. DS used his blazer pockets as pencil case and lunch box.

Pinkfranny · 18/06/2023 16:56

Apologies should have mentioned it is a private school. In two years it’s gone from £77 to £94 and the quality of them really isn’t great 🙁

Unfortunately you can’t get the badges on their own so a DIY job isn’t a possibility.

We have a parents FB group for 2nd hand selling and swaps.

The mark up must be huge and then there’s the commission the school get as well of course.

DD, state seconday, had a blazer for 3 years. (Y7-9) which was £80 5 years ago.

Navy blue with very distinctive piping so no chance of just buying one and sewing on a badge, the thing was one of a kind and for everyone outside the normal size norms, it had to be tailor made.

Absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. After the 3 years they were normally so worn out, it was hard to get a second hand one.

We were lucky, the grandparents paid for the whole set up which up us back by £300 incl. PE kit.

AuditAngel · 18/06/2023 17:02

Ours isn’t private.

For my son, new blazer did years 7-10, new one for year 11 sold on for £25
DD1 was given a blazer for free, lasted years 7-10, then another free second hand one (pretty poor condition) for year 11

DD2 got a new one, she’s year 7

I think the skirt is worse at £47.50, but with DD1 I bought one skirt in year 7, then a secondhand one for £10. Unfortunately DD2 is a different size, she got one new one and I am looking for a second hand one for DD2.

legalbeagleneeded · 18/06/2023 17:05

Just checked £94. Its outrageous.

redskytwonight · 18/06/2023 17:05

(not schoolblazer) DD's is £28 (smaller sizes) or £32 (bigger sizes). She did make one blazer last 5 years :)

I was about to say you should lobby the school to change suppliers, but they may be less amenable if they are a private school. I guess this is just another thing you have to budget for in the overall cost?

BoohooWoohoo · 18/06/2023 17:11

just looked up our school and it's £28.00-35.99 plus £8 for badges

DobbyTheHouseElk · 18/06/2023 17:14

Private school here.

I get second hand as much as possible. I think the blazer was £35 so really shocked by some of these prices.

Recently they announced some changes to the uniform and parents were part of the consultation process. The issue of having to buy through School laxer was raised but someone at the school signed the rights to the school’s logo over to them for a set number of years so they are tied in 🙈

When we budget for all uniform including sports kits and shoes/trainers/rugby boots/coat etc it comes close to £700 a year! We have managed to get 2 years out of the blazer and my daughter starts soon and she’ll get some hand-me-downs. My son is thankfully careful with his things.

Our blazer is £133!

Private secondary, but yeah...

Hoppinggreen · 18/06/2023 19:13

It’s £45 for ours (Private school)
Some of these prices are ridiculous

Is it wool?

Chaircushion · 18/06/2023 19:22

Just looked, our blazers are £94. The skirts are £62.50 which is ridiculous.

BookShark · 18/06/2023 19:23

£109 in DD's smaller size. £129 for the bigger sizes. Private secondary.

Even buying second-hand is at least £50!

RiseYpres · 18/06/2023 19:30

Ours use schoolblazer as well. the DCs (13 and 11) are also circa £90. I was most upset when Ds1 shredded his somehow beyond repair so i could not even hand it down. Dh got a quote for an 'invisible repair' but it was beyond even that.

Made with British wool, exclusively woven for Schoolblazer in Yorkshire and finished with a stain resistant coating to ensure that it repels dirt and stays looking smarter for longer. This 45% wool / 55% polyester fabric is machine washable at 40°C. Do not tumble dry. Do not use fabric conditioner. Iron on a cool heat.

SumAndSubstance · 19/06/2023 14:34

£98 for us too (and £30 for a jumper!!)

Didiplanthis · 19/06/2023 14:41

Ours are £42. Had one in yr 7 grew like a weed, needed a new one for yr 8, hasn't grown out of it but worn through the elbows, so needs a new one. The second hand ones always look shit as the quality is so poor to start with... I'd rather pay more and they last properly...

purpleboy · 19/06/2023 14:49

We're £140 from school blazer. Was £95 last year 😱

HappyCatty · 19/06/2023 15:55

Ours is £99.50 on SchoolBlazer, also private secondary school. And it's absolutely cheap, nasty rubbish Which doesn't even have the school logo on it!

Okay, yes I'd expect a wool mix blazer to be pricey. A polyester one should be under £40.

EmeraldFox · 19/06/2023 18:40

@Didiplanthis
It's shit that the quality seems to vary so much. Ours are £38 and DS's first one lasted three years and was still fit to pass on.

ichundich · 19/06/2023 18:42

Ours was £120 last year (Schoolblazer). To be fair it has lasted all year and will probably do for another. I would make sure you measure your child as per their instructions to get maximum use out of uniform items.
