Schoolblazer uniform costs

Pinkfranny · 18/06/2023 10:37

I can not believe how much schoolblazer keeps increasing the cost of our school’s uniform. I am in discussion with our school about it but I could do with some evidence of other school’s costs that are also obliged to use schoolblazer.

if you have to buy your child’s blazer from www.schoolblazer.com please could you tell me the current price? (You don’t need to name the school)

Ours is now £94 🙈

TIA x

Really? Blimey, ours for ds was only about £40, which was painful enough, but the school do a uniform swap event thing 2 or 3x a year and got a new one for nothing.

I read somewhere that all schools will have to do that from this year onwards so keep a look out for it. It will hopefully save you a fortune.

Ours wasn't from the company you linked to though and the school don't mind if you buy a cheap blazer from the supermarket and sew on a badge.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/06/2023 10:53

I don't buy from that shop but dc1's was £95 last year (because she's now adult size), dc2's was a mere £75 as he's still in child sizes. We have no option for a sew on badge. I only, grudgingly, buy new because I've younger dc who will likely attend the school.

TokyoSushi · 18/06/2023 11:07

Wow, ours is £38 from 'the big uniform shop in town' that does all our local schools - I thought that was expensive!

BadgerFace · 18/06/2023 11:09

I just looked and ours is £99.50 on schoolblazer so I think will be topping £100 by the time DD needs one in year 7…!

SoupDragon · 18/06/2023 11:14

I did buy from that shop but it won't show me blazers as DD is in 6th form and doesn't need one!

Utini · 18/06/2023 11:17

£139 for ours on Schoolblazer. Fortunately there's a second hand uniform shop at the school!

SoupDragon · 18/06/2023 11:17

I've just changed her DOB and the blazer is £100.

which reminds me that I still have hers to give to the secondhand uniform sale!

From this site, https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cost-of-school-uniforms/cost-of-school-uniforms, I was right; it says that schools should provide opportunities for old uniforms to be swapped so parents can get used, 2nd hand items for free or a nominal cost:

Provision of second-hand uniforms
Second-hand uniforms can benefit all parents, particularly those on low incomes. In addition, by extending the life of garments, it is more sustainable.
Schools should ensure that arrangements are in place so that second-hand school uniforms are available for parents to acquire (for example through periodic second-hand uniform sales or swap shops). It is for the school to decide how this will be best achieved. A school may wish to organise the provision or sale of second-hand uniforms themselves or via their Parent Teacher Association (PTA), or to participate in other appropriate established local schemes (for instance a local authority uniform exchange scheme).
While schools can decide the particular method they are going to use to make the provision of second-hand uniforms available to parents, all schools should ensure that information on second-hand uniforms is clear for parents of current and prospective pupils and published on the school’s website. This should clearly state where second-hand uniforms are available to be purchased.

£94!!!!

Ouch 😣

My DC’s school uses a different supplier for school uniform, and their blazers cost between £25 - £30 depending on the size.

EmeraldFox · 18/06/2023 11:23

Is this private schools? Just checked cost of blazers for the school DS left last year and they are £38 (up to 36 inch). He had two in five years so I think that was reasonable. They were also available second hand.

Bobbybobbins · 18/06/2023 11:39

That is a lot! At my school they can buy generic blazers. We don't have a secondhand sale type system as the uniform is very cheap.

AuditAngel · 18/06/2023 11:40

Our school isn’t from there, but £76 up to 34” chest, then £92

newtb · 18/06/2023 13:06

20 years ago, dd's cost either £50 or £60. Was shocked, and she left after year 2.

Sirzy · 18/06/2023 13:09

Our blazers of £35 new but every year 7 is given a starter uniform for free and then they have links with a local charity who arrange for uniform to be redistributed

xyzandabc · 18/06/2023 13:14

I have kids at 3 different secondary schools. Both, you can only get the blazer from 1 particular uniform provider (i.e you can't buy a supermarket blazer and add you own badge).
One is £35.95, the other is £29.65 for the blazers.

These blazers that are £90+, are they private schools?

MymateDave · 18/06/2023 13:21

£25-£30 now from uniforms direct. It’s awful though. Falls apart and so cheaply made. The old supplier charged £65. It lasted us over 2 years and didn’t need repairs each month.

Bookendortwo · 18/06/2023 13:25

Mine go to a state school, school use a local uniform supplier and the cost presently is £29.50.
School have just done a big change in uniform policy in order to reduce costs, following consultation with parents and students.
They've removed the need to have to have branded pe kit, all skirts now need to be bought from the uniform supplier at £15 each and negotiated no increase in price this year (after a 10% increase last june). They've also started a second hand uniform shop which is a donation to the school if able.

llareggub · 18/06/2023 13:30

Up until recently none of the schools in my city had blazers but one or two have introduced them. As my youngest is in year 9 I’m feeling hopeful that if the craze for blazers spreads it won’t impact on us.

blazers are completely unnecessary and schools should reimagine uniform to be cost effective and more practical.

Snowdropsarelovely · 18/06/2023 13:40

Wow, that's crazy ! My DD's last one was £45 ( start of year 10) it will last another year so for 2 years wear 190 days of the year don't feel that's expensive

Not for me, no. Just excessively priced as only one supplier. Skirts are £28 for dd's size (ladies 10 approximately but leggy so a long drop). Jumper £25. Pe kit is £92 for the essential branded items so polo, skort (or shorts, same price), hoodie, leggings/joggers (off brand not allowed), then you have trainers & footie boots on top of that.

They do hold 2nd hand sales but as I said I buy new because I have younger dc to pass it to.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/06/2023 14:47

Ties are only £5 though Grin

pinksummer · 18/06/2023 14:48

£123 for ours on school blazer. It's a private school.

Another76543 · 18/06/2023 15:31

Their prices for our blazers have increased by around 7.5% since last year which I don’t think is too bad considering the current situation. They are definitely better quality that cheaper high street versions as well. If you can guess what size you’ll need, they do a couple of offers a year where you can sometimes get 25% or a third off the price. Obviously they don’t do those offers at this time of year!

Ours was single supplier for blazer, tie and games kit. £38 blazer, £6.50 tie. £24 rugby shirt, £14 PE vest, £10 shorts (x2 colours), £9 socks. That's junior sizes, so up to the equivalent of a children's 16, a bit more for senior. The rest was generic.

It was more the cost of the blazers upthread that I was shocked at.
