Why is 6th form thought of more highly than attending FE college ?

1000 replies

Summersunshinee · 09/04/2023 17:24

I can never understand why if you say that you attend 6th form at school you are thought of more so than if you attended FE college.

I would feel that if anything it would be more impressive to attend FE college as you made the decision to go somewhere else and try something different /

@pointythings I get it you don`t life college. If you had your way everyone would stay at 6th form post 16.

That is current affairs totally different. I didn't know languages were optional now also.

So no colleges are in a rural setting.

You are a snob and are typical of everything wrong with this country.

Well I would get rid of history as it`s already happened so what's the point ?

So you don't think it's important to understand and reflect on the past? You don't think it helps us understand the present and influence the future?

To Paraphrase the character of Rudge from the History Boys. History is just one thing after another.

Can you please quote me saying that? Because I didn't. All I have ever said is that college is the best thing for some young people, 6th form is best for others. You're the one who is 100% resentful of 6th forms and the people who go there.

If you can't see the parallels between what is happening now in countries like the US, Poland, Hungary and the runup to WW2 then you really need to do some reading because that is an abysmal lack of knowledge.

And?
That doesn't answer my question. Although I suspect you don't have an answer as you appear to arbitrarily declare subjects a waste of time because you personally don't like them or understand the relevance.

You don`t say anything positive about college at all. You just think that not everyone should go to college which is small minded.

We are not going to have world war 3.

I don`t mind history.

To be honest i think more modern history (post ww2) should be taught.

That is not true. I have spoken about my best friend whose two eldest will be going to college, and how pleased I am that they have found something to do that they are passionate about. I have spoken about my eldest's peers who moved to college in Year 12 because it was the best thing for them to do.

It is not small minded to think that not everyone should go to college, it is rational. College is right for some. 6th form is right for others. There's only one small minded person on this thread, and it isn't me.

Do you know what the Doomsday Clock is? Are you aware that it is closer to midnight than it has ever been? Do you understand the dangers of Russian ultra nationalism?

God this is the funniest thing i have seen in a long time.

You really need to read more widely. It isn't fiction.

I'm so glad that you aren't running education in the UK. It would be a mean spirited, narrow-minded place.

You realise that a subject's syllabus gets revised and updated don't you?

If I was in charge of education we would have a balanced curriculum of academic and vocational study.

@pointythings Conspiracy theorist much ?

Not in the slightest. These people use scientific methodologies, analysing data on a range of subjects. If you think the war in Ukraine, environmental damage and atomic proliferation aren't a threat to our world, you're living in a pink bubble. I'd like to live in one too, but I live in the real world. I'm not sure you know what a conspiracy theorist is, to be honest.

But back to the topic. There's only one person on this thread who believes that only one form of post 16 education should exist. That person isn't me. So who's small minded here?

No. No realisations from this OP. Not one. Ever.

So it`s small minded to have a change post 16 ? go somewhere different ? meet new people ? have different tutors ? be taught in a different way ? be in a more mature environment ?

No but it's small minded to think that's the ONLY suitable option. You don't seem to grasp that people are different and suited to different things.

pointythings · 19/06/2023 21:37

No, it's not. It's small minded to think that this is the only right way to manage post 16 education and that it will be right for every single young person in the UK. I believe that there should be different options and free choice. You want a one size fits all solution. I'm not the small minded one here.

And since you have not attended 6th form, you don't know what it is like. It often is completely different from school. No uniform, no hand holding, no checking homework, responsibility for work and achievement in the hands of the students, teaching methods completely different. Because at 6th form, you prepare for university, where you need those skills. You don't know that because you haven't been there. I know that, because my kids have.

Summersunshinee · 19/06/2023 21:49

Part of adapting to new situations is surviving.

Whey are you talking about?

@pointythings Rubbish how would teaching in 6th form be any different from school.

Not rubbish. I've working in and with dozens of schools and colleges.
Teaching in a sixth form can be very different to what happens lower down school.
If you're taught by the same teachers they recognise that you're now in post 16 education and adapt their teaching style accordingly (after all they're trained professionals!!).
However, if you're studying a subject that is only offered at A level then your teacher might ONLY teach 6th formers so it's bound to be different.

pointythings · 19/06/2023 21:57

Well see, here's where I can help you.

The teaching is very different. Instead of a teacher standing in front of a classroom talking at a class of students, it's interactive. Students are expected to bring in their own topics and ideas based on their independent reading, and discuss. Homework is not usually marked, although in essay subjects there are essays set with long deadlines and these are marked (just like at University!). There are no detentions for work that isn't done; instead it's natural consequences. Unless there are practicals going on, students are allowed to eat in class and take breaks when they feel the need. The ethos is about taking personal responsibility. It's probably very like college, in fact.

Your instant and rude dismissal of something you know absolutely nothing about says a great deal about you.

Summersunshinee · 19/06/2023 22:06

@DollyTrolly and @pointythings I have friends who went to 6th form and so did my sister.

The teaching was no different to school
