North London schools with very high pastoral care?

I’m looking for a school with really excellent pastoral care for my DS aged 8. (So I know I’d be looking for one with occasional places!)

He’s very bright, says his school; but we’re not the pushy tutoring type. He’s currently at a state primary school which isn’t working as well as it could for a few reasons, and DS is also pretty shy.

Where should I start looking?

It's not clear if you're looking for a state or private school?

Schooladvice7 · 05/03/2023 09:59

Oh - a private school! There are so many different options that I have no idea where to start looking.

Hi OP, sounds like you should be looking at King Alfred's School and Heathside

Whereabouts in north London are you? If you're out in the suburbs you could consider Lochinver House which is in Potters Bar?

Marisquita · 05/03/2023 21:40

Perhaps consider St Margaret’s in Bushey, which has school buses into North London. Can you be a bit more specific about where you are?

King Alfreds. Fantastic pastoral care.

If you are open to different systems, we found the American school in London incredibly good on the pastoral (and academic) front

Schooladvice7 · 05/03/2023 22:03

We’re in Muswell Hill so can travel a bit but not wildly far!

Thank you for all this advice so far - I am looking them all up!

Ah OK - well, do look at St Margaret’s as it has a Muswell Hill coach stop. And is on a growth trajectory so may well have an occasional place. PM me if you have any particular questions, as I know it well.

London prep schools are generally not very nurturing, we moved out.

Twilightstarbright · 05/03/2023 22:29

Also suggesting Lochinver or St Margaret’s.

I’m looking at its homepage now and it looks lovely! But it’s a 45 min drive away. Interesting that there’s a coach though. Do you have children there?

@Schooladvice7 Yes, one DC there and very happy with it. We are also in N London. Do DM if you like as happy to discuss.
