"I went to huge lengths to get my child into the locat RC school because the results are brilliant - imagine my horror when they came home saying that contraception is a sin - what should I do?"

Do you thing there are going to be a lot of threads like this in the future?

OP posts:
figleaf · 27/01/2008 19:20

Catholic schools will tend to be Catholic in their policy and outlook. Contraception (excluding Persona and rhythm method) is against church teaching. I have frequently heard abortion described as a sin but my experience is that contraception is either not spoken about much or lumped together with the compulsory elements of sex ed that the Science dpt teach.
I fear that if church teaching bothers you, you will be wanting to write more threads like this. Your choices would seem to be ... 1. get on with it or 2. move your child to another school or 3. have him/her removed from the RE elements of the curriculum. Number 3 isn't as drastic as number 2 but does tend to make the kids "outsiders". This option would not get you out of implicit church teaching just the overt RE curriculum. The other stuff will be deeply ingrained in the fabric of the school and it's staff. This is usually what parents want though so I don't really know how to best advise you. Hope this helps.

Take him out, and leave the place open for a Catholic child.

Karen999 · 27/01/2008 19:26

Dont know why you are surprised at this....this is just one of a number of Catholic beliefs...granted some priests/schools etc are less strict than others but this is one of the fundamentals.....why would you want to go to great lenghts to get your child a place at a particular school and then be horrified by what they are teaching them??

Quattrocento · 27/01/2008 19:33

Well Seeker, you took your choice old thing.

Personally I think all faith schools are divisive and probably shouldn't exist.

But I think that about private schools too and I send my children to one.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 27/01/2008 19:37

You went to great lengths to get your child into a Catholic school...........

Did you go to great lengths to understand the Catholic religion..........

figleaf · 27/01/2008 19:41

I've just read one of your other threads Seeker about staying and playing after school. You seem to be a governor at the school in that thread. Is this the Catholic school? (No particular reason for asking - just trying to understand a little bit about how you have been surprised by this). As a (presumably non - RC) governor of a RC school you are either an LEA gov or parent gov?

pointydog · 27/01/2008 19:47

I expect people not to be so daft as to come out with comments like this. I have high expectations.

LynetteScavo · 27/01/2008 19:47

Duh! i think seeker is just wondering if there will be many posts like this in the future, rather than actually beingin this position.

I think seeker is putting a hypothetical situation, not a personal one....

anorak · 27/01/2008 19:50

Yes Lynette, that's what I thought too. I think seeker fancied a debate.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 27/01/2008 19:50

let me assure you - half the catholic parents will use contraception

ignore it seeker- we did

we were the only unmarried parents in the school - i would do it again!

policywonk · 27/01/2008 19:51

Poor misunderstood seeker...

I don't think people are quite so dim, at least most of the time. (Although most of the posts in this thread suggest otherwise...)

figleaf · 27/01/2008 19:52

Why are there 2 threads with this title? so Seeker is a Catholic governor of a Catholic school and is complaining that people say this sort of stuff to her is she?

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 27/01/2008 19:53

Given how many parents say they don't approve of faith schools/religious teaching but send their DCs to a faith school anyway because they are better academically, then yes seeker, we probably will!

Karen999 · 27/01/2008 19:55

Oops...misunderstood the OP - sorry!

pointydog · 27/01/2008 19:56

I realised seeker wasn't saying this herself. I noted the speech marks

onebatmother · 27/01/2008 19:57

Everyone!

SEEKER DIDN"T DO THIS! NOR DOES SHE SAY THIS!

But she is wondering how many who DID will be saying this in the future.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions on this matter etc etc.

winestain · 27/01/2008 19:59

I was gobsmacked until I got to Policy's post. Then I just sprayed the computer screen with tea

onebatmother · 27/01/2008 19:59

I'm off to pedant's corner to start a thread on the ways in which reported speech may be indicated.

figleaf · 27/01/2008 20:00

policywonk, I didn't think it was being dim to answer what I thought was an honest question honestly asked. I haven't been judgemental or tried to have an argument about the issue of Faith schools. Why does that make me dim?

If I wanted a debate about somthing then I feel it is better to be clear and say that statements like the one in the thread title wind me up and what do other people think.

policywonk · 27/01/2008 20:06

Sorry figleaf, I was just arsing about.

figleaf · 27/01/2008 20:08

OK

seeker · 28/01/2008 06:24

Thanks to all who came to my rescue. I will go back to my usual role of saying "Don't worry. he/she is still very young - he she will learn to use a potty/sleep through the night/read/stay in his/her own bed/walk/do quantum physics/eat caviar/talk/insert cativity of choice when h/she is ready" and not try to be too clever for my own good.

Out if interest, do people realize that English is the only language which has an expression equivalent to "too clever for your own good"? Says something about out national psyche, doesn't it!

luminarphrases · 28/01/2008 06:37

seeker, i understood you, and thought 'good point, well made'

im against non-faith people going to faith schools anyway, but could see tons of these threads in the future, alas....
