How far away from your house is the primary school that your DC attends?

Currently my DD is in Reception and the school she attends is a 10 minute walk away. This is great. We are moving later in the year and I may not be able to match up buying a house with using the nearest school. The decent schools in the town are full. There's a small school spaces a few miles out of the town. we don't yet know if we'll live in the town or live on the outskirts or if we should make an effort to live as close to the school as possible.

I'm curious to know how far other people are willing to travel to take their DC to a decent primary school.

The one DS will go to this year is just round the corner. GoogleMaps says it is 0.1 miles away but think that this a little generous!

Blandmum · 16/01/2008 17:17

3 miles, and has to be done by car if we are all to get to our respective schools on time

We used to live about a mile and a half away, and drove for various reasons to do with time, buses, DS's dodgy leg etc.

Moved to just round the corner, and the difference, in being able to walk to school, has improved the quality of our lives no end.

Not just the journey to school, but the fact that his friends are up the street / across the road, and there is a willing network of us mutually helping with pick-ups, playdates, emergencies etc, lots of spontaneous having people to play, calling in on trip to park etc. I would do all I could to be close to school and friends!

a little over 3 miles is the closest one.

the council lays on a bus, as this is a rural area and kids come to this school from 15-20 miles away.

Cremolafoam · 16/01/2008 17:25

3.7 miles. i know this because the rule for getting a bus pass is tht you have to be further away than 3 miles.
got the bus pass . phew

OverMyDeadBody · 16/01/2008 17:25

an 8 minute walk away or 3 minute cycle ride . It's a very good school too so I'm happy!

pointydog · 16/01/2008 17:29

2 min walk. We can see it from upstairs

filthymindedvixen · 16/01/2008 17:30

a mile. 10-15 mins with kids, 8 mins by myself
(my nearest school is 2 mins walk away but we hated it)

ambercat · 16/01/2008 17:31

about a mile, takes us 20 mins to walk but it is a nice walk (foot bridge over the railway so we see trains who beep and wave at us ,much to ds2 delight!). I can do it in 15 mins without children.

We have got a nearer school but i prefered this one.

JingleyJen · 16/01/2008 17:31

15 minute walk - 2 minute drive (+parking time!!) it is 1.1 mile each way.

ScarletA · 16/01/2008 17:33

ours is the best in the borough and (quite by accident I might add, having bought the place years before we had kids) only 5 mins away.

cory · 16/01/2008 17:41

I don't drive and dd has joint problems, so that limits us. Fortunately, the infants school was in the next road and the junior school is only 10 minute walks away. For secondary school, we're hoping the council will provide transport.

My DS's school is the other side of our garden hedge! It is outstanding and I wouldn't want him to go anywhere else.

It does put us off moving house though, knowing that we would have to possibly drive to the school which I wouldn't want to do.

I would be prepared to walk for 20 minutes each way I think although I suppose it depends whethere your children are in Yr R or Yr 6. 20 minutes at the end of a hard day for a 4 y.o. might be a bit much, especially in the rain!

TheDullWitch · 16/01/2008 17:48

200m

CountessDracula · 16/01/2008 17:48

5 mins walk

andiemustlosehalfastonemore · 16/01/2008 17:48

5 mins walk

psychomum5 · 16/01/2008 17:58

nearly 2miles, and up a hill on the way, so we drive and takes between 5 and 20mins to get there depending on traffic. ( I have walked, but with the children in can take a looooooong time!)

nearest school is at end of the road, but dire and I moved mine from there 2.5yrs ago.

elder girls school is 2miles away in the other direction, and thankfully a friend does them most days otherwise I would have to leave the house at 7.50am everyday to get all five in on time.

I also collect a friends 2 on the way, and a different 2 to bring home!

oxocube · 16/01/2008 18:00

about 300 mtrs! How lucky am I ?

tassisssss · 16/01/2008 18:02

a 2 min walk downhill because we're rushing to get there on time

a 5 min walk home up the hill pushing heavy toddler in pram

Elphaba · 16/01/2008 18:07

About a mile, maybe just over.

needmorecoffee · 16/01/2008 18:12

she goes to two. SN one is 7 miles away so a taxi fetches her. Mainstream is 500 yards so she is pushed there inna wheelchair.
But with my older 3 we walked 2 miles. Would never drive to school!
