6 Grammar schools accessible from one postcode?

Indigoo03 · 13/06/2022 06:50

I can't find the original thread though a poster said they were close to six grammar schools? I didn't know that was possible would anyone which areas in England this would be?

I know Buckinghamshire has a lot but even six would be a stretch for accessing from one postcode?

You'd be within easy reach of six grammars in parts of Kent, but they're single sex, so you wouldn't be able to apply to them all for the same child.

eurochick · 13/06/2022 06:57

Someone in the Bexley/Bromley area could probably say this. Maybe Sutton?

InMySpareTime · 13/06/2022 06:58

You could be in 6 grammar catchments in Trafford, if you count the single sex and faith schools. Grammars have massive and overlapping catchments.

6 grammas schools in Tonbridge/Tunbridge Wells area but 3 boys 3 girls

thing47 · 13/06/2022 09:33

In Bucks you could be close to 6 grammar schools (as in realistic travel time) for sure, but they are catchment-area schools so you wouldn't actually be able to access them all. There isn't very much overlap in catchments.

LadyJaneHall · 13/06/2022 09:39

Eurochick - This is not the case in Bromley. There are two single sex Grammar schools and those at the other end of the borough are not likely to get in.

When I was younger,in Orpington, you would find people going to the Bexley grammars (4), Orpington grammars (2) and the Wilmington grammars (2). But obviously theres 3 pairs of boy/girl schools in there.

Then there's the Private ones.

DaisyWaldron · 13/06/2022 09:42

Were they definitely in England? In Northern Ireland, it wouldn't be at all unusual. I grew up in Belfast, and the kids in my street went to 7 (actually 9, but some of them merged) different grammar schools between us.

ChicCroissant · 13/06/2022 09:52

Gloucestershire? That has super-selective grammars with no catchment areas, most of the grammars are single-sex though.

Seeline · 13/06/2022 09:53

You might be able to do five from the Sutton area for boys - Wallington County, Wilsons, Sutton (LBS), Tiffins (LBK) and St Olaves (LBB).

Mushroo · 13/06/2022 09:56

Trafford would do it. I think if you lived in M33 you’d get:
Altrincham girls / boys
sale grammar
loreto grammar
st Ambrose
stretford grammar
urmston grammar

LeafHunter · 13/06/2022 09:56

I think you could do six from Birmingham quite easily.

Yodaisawally · 13/06/2022 09:57

Bromley

They're not grammar though, they are super selective

NeverTooLateToSing · 13/06/2022 10:03

Sounds like Gloucestershire. They are all state schools, all 'super-selective' and all have mixed sixth forms afaik.

In Gloucester:
Sir Thomas Rich's (boys)
Denmark Road High School (girls)
Ribston High (girls)
Crypt (mixed)

In Cheltenham - Pates (mixed)

In Stroud - Stroud High (girls) and Marling (boys)

FamousFrivolities · 13/06/2022 12:17

The King Edwards in Birmingham all have catchments now. So my child would only be eligible for 1 of these (being single sex). As far as I know, there is only a couple of grammars in Birmingham that don't have catchments - Bishop Vesey and Sutton Girls.

Winkydink · 13/06/2022 12:18

In some parts of southeast London near the Kent border

BaronessBomburst · 13/06/2022 12:21

With a Bournemouth/ Poole postcode you've got two girls' grammars and two boys' grammars.

Yeah, you're right, that's 7 and M33 would get you in. I think the rest are private grammars. As far as I know WA14 & 15 would also get you into all of those state ones.

My message should have quoted Mushroo

emsyj37 · 13/06/2022 12:35

There are 6 in my area - Wirral. 3 for boys and 3 for girls.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 13/06/2022 12:47

Where I live we’re in, what I’d consider, easy reach of seven grammar schools. If you were prepared to go just slightly further, there’s actually nine. Two lots of those are single sex though meaning a choice of seven grammar schools per sex - except at sixth form where they all admit both sexes.

BendingSpoons · 13/06/2022 12:57

There is a tiny area in Sutton where you are in the priority areas for:

Boys:
Sutton Grammar
Wallington
Wilsons
Tiffin

Girls:
Nonsuch
Wallington
Tiffin

If you live in the correct postcodes, then places are allocated mainly on score, rather than distance. Where we live, we are in the area for 5 of the schools above.

HeidiWhole · 13/06/2022 13:04

In parts of Kent it's easy to have 6 state grammar schools in fairly close range, sometimes more. Some are single sex though and one or two would need v high 11+ scores to get into if out of immediate catchment.

Chewbecca · 13/06/2022 13:09

Could be Essex where you have 2 in Colchester, 2 in Chelmsford and 4 in Westcliff / Southend. (All single sex).
