Which WB Yeats' poem choices for lazy, disinterested 17 year old to study?

So my DS has to study 2 WB Yeats' poems for his Year 11 English assignment. I am unfamiliar with Yeats' poetry so thought I'd ask you guys. These are the choices:

  • When you are old.
  • The wild swans at Coole.
  • The second coming.
  • Easter.
  • Among school children.
If you are familiar with Yeats' work, may I ask which two of these poems you would recommend for my DS? Many thanks.

Definitely The Second Coming. Scary, apocalyptic stuff. I’ve a fondness for the Swans, but the best thing is to read them all then choose the two that stand out to your son.

@CloudPine thank you 😀

The Second Coming is hands down one of the most important poems of the 20th Century, and brilliant.
When You Are Old is lovely, this would be my other choice.

@heldinadream thank you. Also can anybody recommend study guides for these poems? I want to help him understand them and prepare for his assignment. God help me.

Too late to swap him for another child? 😜

Shouldn't his school/college and teachers be suggesting what he should do Confused

When you are old and grey

Definitely second coming, lots of imagery to get your teeth into.

AndAsIfByMagic · 08/05/2022 11:20

Second Coming for sure.

When You Are Old is a good contrast.

I love The Second Coming. I studied it at school at it's one of the few poems I've read again as an adult.
