Could someone please tell me about a good entrance exam tutor in Cambridge? Thinking of preparing my 9-year-old for 2022 entrance. Thanks

probably worth asking teachers at school or go on a local page? DS (yr 6) just sat Cambridge school tests but they all went online this year...most people do tutor though and the Perse expect you to have prepared. Good luck, it was crazy competitive this year but that might due to Covid and/or Cambridge populations rising

Thanks, gctastic. It's crazy competitive. On top of that Leys got only 18 places. Heard lots of good things about Perse, but too academic to mine. I found a tutor through Mytutor and so far going well.
Hope you get the good news soon.

thanks soundround, he got the place he wanted (I won't say on here where...) - The exams for the schools are all quite similar if done the traditional way (not online) so it's not such a bad idea to try for the Perse even if it's just an aspiration - the preparation will stand them in good stead for anywhere

Congratulations gctastic . Very happy for you.

@gctastic @soundround hi both I’m thinking of sending mine to the Pelican school at Perse - would you recommend putting them in at reception to avoid the pressure of the 11+? Just how bad is the pressure to get in? DS1 is in reception at moment and extremely happy in an excellent prep out of the area but we are thinking of relocating to Cambs as love the area and look of Perse Upper. No particularly good secondaries where we are. So we’d have to try and do an in year move if a place became available. DS2 is young enough for us to put his name down in the proper way. Do you think it’s worth moving DS1 when he’s happy and thriving at school to remove the 11+ pressure? He is bright and doing really well at school and v happy but thinking it may be the best thing in the end to remove the 11+ pressure as no guarantees he would pass at 11. What do you think?

@gctasticany congrats on DS getting the place he wanted!

@HazelnutCookies - I think if it is the school you want then I would definitely think about getting them into the Pelican - I know a few children who have left our state primary for exactly that reason to ensure they would get an Upper place. A few left to go to Kings Ely for the same reason - avoiding 11+.
We never looked at the Pelican but I do have a friend tried for her son this year and there were 40 applicants for 3 places in year 6! But you know it is not the end of the world, there are loads of great schools in Cambridge/area - it is a bit of a shame that it has all got so ridiculously competitive, sigh

@gctastic thanks so much for your reply, that’s really so helpful. We are going to the open day this September which should be helpful as with Covid we haven’t been able to get to see inside the school in the flesh until now but love everything we’ve heard/read about it and the top academics. In year 1/2 what do you reckon our chances of getting an in year place would be? 40 for 3 places in year 6 is absolutely bonkers!!
